I recently visited the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane and wanted to share my experience. The sanctuary offers a truly enriching opportunity to observe a diverse range of Australian wildlife, including koalas, kangaroos, and wallabies, alongside many other fascinating creatures. While the admission price might be considered somewhat high, I understand the significant costs associated with maintaining such a facility and ensuring the well-being of its inhabitants.
The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the engaging and educational raptor and sheepdog demonstrations. These presentations provided fascinating insights into the unique abilities of these animals. I highly recommend Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary as a worthwhile destination for individuals, couples, and families seeking an enjoyable and informative experience. The opportunity to learn about and connect with these magnificent animals is truly remarkable.

A very nice place to spend a half day while in Brisbane. Many koalas and kangaroos as well as few other Australian wild and domestic animals and birds with some life shows. Great for families with kids but also for any age animal enthusiasts. Easy access by public transportation from downtown Brisbane. There is a nice option to take a river cruise there and back. Unless you really want to touch a koala, special packages which include a short encounter are unnecessary. There are so many koalas that you can see up close there and only if you are eager to touch you need the special packages.

What a wonderful place. The Flying Raptor show was awesome. Lots of knowledge and excitement. The birds actually flew through the crowd. The handlers were full of knowledge. We even paid a little extra at the end of the show to hold the bird & take a picture. What a rare opportunity and totally worth it.

And they’re so cute and floofy!
I’m not a fan of petting wild creatures so like the fact you can’t hold them at the sanctuary, but you can get pretty close to them and you’ll get some great photos.
The interactions with roos and wombats were a bit too hands on for me, with kids able to walk over to them while they’re relaxing and hug them, much to their parents’ delight. The animals didn’t seem to mind and maybe it’s great to create that bond and care for animals at a young age, it’s just not for me.
So I’d recommend if you want to see some beautiful creatures. They all seem well cared for and I learned a lot!

A Must-Visit!
I absolutely love this place—I’ve been here three times already, and I’d go again in a heartbeat! Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is perfect for everyone—families, kids, couples, or even solo travelers. No matter your age, this place has something special to offer.
It’s the perfect escape from the city, where you can immerse yourself in nature and connect with incredible wildlife. Feeding the animals, wandering through the beautiful surroundings, and just soaking in the peaceful atmosphere make for such a refreshing experience.
The staff here are incredibly friendly and helpful, always ensuring visitors have the best experience. The sanctuary is also impressively clean and well-maintained, which makes exploring even more enjoyable.
Of course, the stars of the show—the adorable koalas—are everywhere, and the free-range kangaroos are an absolute joy to feed and pet. Watching them up close is such a unique and memorable experience!
Coffee and snack caffe available at the sanctuary.
Getting here is easy, with convenient Uber access and free parking for visitors.

All of the animals are very well treated. The stars are the koalas and kangaroos, but the platypus was unique. Plenty of space to walk around.
If you come by boat and only have 3 hours in the sanctuary, skip the nocturnal animal part, as there is nothing to see in daytime.

I had this trip booked about 1 year ago and although you can no longer hold a koala, you can touch and have photos taken with them at an additional cost. It certainly didn't disappoint. The koalas, feeding the kangaroos and the aerial raptor display were definitely the highlights but there were other animals, crocodiles, dingos, water dragons just wandering around the tourists. We didn't get to see the wombats or the Tasmanian Devil, but there are various species of Cockatoo.
Our day here was excellent, thank you.

Great wildlife sanctuary with many animals. The Koalas are cute and you can see them very closely. There are dingos, birds, crocodiles, tasmanian devils and many more. The park is big, but well organized. The rare platypus is amazing.

Took the cruise from South Bank. Enjoyed the raptor show and the sheep dog show. Enjoyed the farm animals. Saw a Tassie Devil, crocodile, dingoes and platypus. Koalas can be found near the cafe. Enjoyed lunch outside at the tables by the car park with a view of the river. Kudos to the staff that work here, you are doing a great job caring for these animals.

This is a great place to visit if you want to see a lot of koala, hear me out, there’s plenty, wherever you go there’s a koala.
However this place only mainly has Australian native animals like kangaroos, Tasmanian devil, platypus and many more Australian animals. So don’t expect to see animals you see in a normal zoos like elephants, giraffes or rhinos.
To be fair, all the enclosures are well designed and it’s like a replica to the real environment the animals live. For the kangaroos, there’s a large open area where all the kangaroos just hops around and you can feed them and get close up. There are interesting animals shows which you don’t have to book in advance.
They also offer photo with koala and I recommend booking in advance because they have limited slots per day.
I went on a weekend and it’s not very crowded because the park is massive. You can get around the park on feet.
The parking is free and there’s plenty of slots even on a weekend.

We visited on a school holiday Monday; arrived at 10 am and went straight in. Caught the end of the lorikeet feeding which the children really enjoyed. The Raptor show was the highlight for me with owls swooping low overhead! Don’t bother buying kangaroo food - they were completely full by the time we went after lunch - but even though the enclosure is expansive they were happy to be patted and we got some lovely photos. Yes, there is a free range emu in with the marsupials!
There were enough exhibits to keep the children (7 and 5) engaged for nearly 5 hours - and koalas, so many koalas! Surprised to see a cassowary in such a small area. There was a rescued wedged tail eagle so perhaps it was a rescue too. I felt a little guilty about the platypus and other animals in smallish enclosures.
An unexpected delight were the Tasmanian tigers racing around their large enclosure and under the walkways in the Nocturnal area, past the farm animals.
The quality and price of lunch was as expected from a tourist attraction - I would recommend making the effort to bring your own food and only purchase coffee and drinks at the cafe. You can watch koalas while you eat in the large covered area and we were stunned to run into a couple of miniature donkeys in the gift shop on the way out!
An enjoyable day, not cheap for four adults and two children, but a convenient way to see all our iconic Australian animals in the heart of the city.

The zoo is fantastic -- lots of wonderful Australian fauna in one place. The koalas are the definite highlight and you can pay extra to get a photo close with one (and you can pet it, so soft! 34$ for a group of 4) or pay even more to hold it (something like 45$ for an individual). They may sell out so try to book ahead. We did the group photo experience and that was great.

Must go. Very close to Brisbane. Workers told us the koala holding doesn’t usually sell out until 11 pm. I would buy entry tickets ahead of time and get there by 8:30 to make sure you can hold the Koalas at a good time. The public bus stops in the parking lot. Workers were friendly. Over 100 koalas and lots of pettable kangaroos. My girl really wanted to hold a koala and it was impossible at Steve’s zoo without booking weeks ahead of time. Plus the entry and holding are cheaper here. We went here and the zoo and both were amazing. They are doing lots of good work here. Please support them. You should figure at least 4 hours here. Will return. Koala holding was only about 30 seconds but didn’t feel rushed. The workers were nice and very happy to take cell phone pics. Plus it comes with a printed photo.

What a treat to spend the afternoon at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary! We had a short few hours to spend in Brisbane, so we found some discounted tickets online and hopped a bus from downtown.
Knowing this is a sanctuary and not a zoo, we felt good about the treatment of the animals and the quality of care they receive. Staff were friendly and informative, and we loved this rare opportunity to be so close to some of these animals. For just $2 AU, you can purchase kangaroo food and hand feed one of the many roos and wallabies in the expansive kangaroo enclosure. I never thought I'd be wandering a field filled with kangaroos and even an emu. It was a very cool and unique experience for visitors coming from outside Australia.
For as little as about $35AU, you can also book a koala experience. This gave us a quick couple minutes to take photos up close and even pet one of the koalas while it perched on a tree-like stand and enjoyed munching on a eucalyptus branch. We got some pretty great photos from this. You can also choose to pay more for an upgraded encounter where you actually hold a koala and get professional photos taken. The encounters have a daily capacity, so you'll want to book in advance online, especially if you're going on a busier weekend. We enjoyed our brief session, and the koalas seemed unbothered, just happily snacking away.
Even without paying extra, you can get fantastic photos since the koalas perch in simulated trees, happily napping and munching on eucalyptus leaves, while safely separated maybe 15-20 feet away from visitors, and without the added visual barriers of caged enclosures.
There are also other animals to see- birds, dingos, wombats, free roaming lizards, and even the world's oldest platypus. We spent about 3 hours exploring, and we could've spent another hour or two if we'd planned around some of the other animal experiences, like feeding the lorikeets or if we'd paid for another up close and personal behind the scenes tour.
Overall, this was an awesome place to visit, and I'd love to return someday

This is a Koala Sanctuary rather than a zoo - so whilst there are other species there, these are not the focus of exhibits. But if you love Koala, look no further. This place is a gem. It is clear that the staff are knowledgeable and really care about the animals in their charge, and the environment was beautiful.
We had a behind the scenes guided tour - a ‘Discovery Tour’ - and were guided by Elle. She was friendly and a perfect guide, sharing her knowledge and information at the right level for a diverse group. She was organised and kept us all on time and in line.
Whilst there, Elle noticed one of the elderly Koala had sneezed and produced nasal discharge. She immediately flagged this on the radio and a more senior colleague arrived within 60 secs to give the Koala some support. It was lovely to see.
We also got to hold a Koala, and it was evident that this is approached carefully and considerately. The animals were not stressed and are looked after by their keepers to make sure they were happy and safe. A lovely experience which we will never forget. Thanks

Nice little sanctuary with lots of koala’s. The yard with the kangaroos also is very nice. The rest of the zoo is a bit questionable. Especially if you want to see the nocturnal animals and other animals like wombats. They are not visible at all.

Wonderful experience all around. We went first on a weekday for the koala and raptor encounters which were great. The kangaroo area was also really cool.
Went back a few days later for the nocturnal tour which was incredible. Emily was very fun and kept things lively while we waited for the previous group to finish. The staff as a whole were extremely knowledgeable and had so much information on all the animals as we saw them in their most active time of day. Any other zoo or sanctuary I’ve been to you see these animals sleeping. On the nocturnal tour they give you thermal cameras to find them, red torches to illuminate the animals without disturbing them which were also great for taking pictures. The animals were active, feeding and very interested in the tour group.
Very cool experience.
10/10 would recommend.

However, ultimately, it’s a for-profit zoo - with cages and fences throughout, owned by a foreign private corporation and limited information about its animal welfare/research efforts. So for those very conscious, this may not be the right place. And even for those not as conscious - try to abstain from the koala touching/cuddling experience - regardless of what the guides say, research seems to indicate it’s bad for the koalas (that’s why other states outside of Queensland banned it). Look it up.

Hi there,
Thanks for sharing your review, we really appreciate hearing our guest's thoughts on their visit and any recommendations they may have.
It is great to hear that you caught some of our daily shows and talks, this is a great chance to learn about some of our wonderful animals and how they act in the wild. Our keepers will generally love to chat after the show with any questions that you may have about what you have seen.
We do have information on our website and in our Koala Science Institute on our conservation efforts and I am happy to inform you that our exhibits are up to the highest standard as required by our Zoo Aquarium Association accreditation. We only operate animal encounters on our animals terms and if they are not comfortable participating I can assure that our keepers are well-trained to spot these signs and return our animals back to their exhibits.

We got to interact with Koalas, Kangaroos and many other animals. We got to go be hind the scenes. It was the tour to end all tours. Expensive but amazing.

Hi there,
Thank you for your review, we really appreciate it. We are lucky enough to provide a home for over 70 native Australian animals in our sanctuary.
I am glad to hear that you got to hop on our Platypus Behind the Scenes tour, it is a lot of fun to work with an Education Officer to feed our Platypus from above their enclosure. We are very lucky to have platypodes Barrak and Aroona.
We have over 100 Koalas in the sanctuary with our keepers hosting daily shows and talks throughout the day to educate our guests on our wonderful animals.

Hi there,
It is great to hear that you had a Koala Hold booked in! This is a very special experience that not all of our guests are able to participate in so I hope you had a great experience. We donate $1 per ticket to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy for both our Koala Hold or Koala Encounter.
Our wombats are in our new Wild Walk area and if you have the time I would recommend checking this out at night on one of our Nocturnal Tours as this is when our wombats are more active.

Lovely place to visit! I would recommend coming in the morning and taking your time walking around as it’s quite large and takes time. Lots of different animals to see and you can also pay extra if you want to hold a koala or snake.. different activities throughout the day. Would recommend bringing your own water along as there are no water fountains and a bottle costs around $5, also bring a hat and sunscreen it gets super hot during the day as there’s not much shade around. Staff are super friendly and helpful. Prices are pretty good I think especially since you can stay as long as you want. Overall good day out ????

We visited in Nov 2023 and did the Platinum tour with Megan. She was awesome, and the park is absolutely stunning. We were allowed to walk up, feed, and pet the Kangaroos. We were taken behind the scenes to see the platypus. We saw tons of koala bears and got to hold and pet one. Saw mommy's and their babies. Tons of lizards running around, shared some fruit with them while having a morning snack. We met Dingos, saw and held snakes, turtles.
You most definitely need to plan a trip to this park. It is 100% worth it.

It's a very nice place to check out some native surrealism animals, particularly a lot of koalas and kangaroos. They have different shows along the day as well so if you like animals plan to spend the day there.
The only downsides: there is no water fountain to fill up your water bottle even though they try to me very sustainable. Also some of the shows like hold a koala are quite expensive and have their own tickets!

The sanctuary is not quite big. But we could experience lovely things. So many kangaroos lay on or ate the grass. They were not scared by people nor was aggressive. They were very friendly..maybe they are socialized:) You can also see the baby koala, which is very cute.

One significant challenge I encountered was the limited time between shows, which didn't allow us ample opportunity to stroll through the sanctuary with the children, exploring along the way. This rushed schedule made it difficult to navigate from one end of the sanctuary to the other and then return for the subsequent show. It was quite demanding for the kids, especially considering their young age. As a result, we found ourselves frequently carrying them, which wasn't particularly accommodating for a kid-friendly experience. Despite their eagerness to see everything, the constant back-and-forth movement led to excessive walking, creating a less than ideal situation for their enjoyment.
I would have appreciated a bit more time between the shows, particularly between the 11 am sheep dog show and the 11:30 am koala talk. The limited time frame made it challenging to move from one end of the sanctuary to the other. By the time we arrived, all the seats were taken, and there was no space available for a good view. The congestion was worsened by the influx of others with the same idea as us, making the walkways to the koala talk overwhelmingly crowded. It would have been beneficial if the schedule specified the exact location of the koala talk, as we found ourselves asking other visitors who were just as clueless as we were about the talk's whereabouts. Unfortunately, there wasn't a staff member readily available for guidance, leaving us to take a guess and hope for the best.

It’s a lovely place to interact with Kangaroos ???? You can feed them, take a photo with a koala (paying an extra fee) and see other animals shows. The sanctuary is large, so save at least half day to enjoy it. There’s a bus coming from Brisbane city that stops inside the sanctuary. It’s quite convenient!

Lone Pine is a fantastic interactive park, great for families with kids. It was a bit busy on Saturday, but there was no line to a ticket booth. Though there were no slots available for koala encounter, I would suggest booking it in advance or visiting earlier to reserve your spot.

I did the Platinum Tour at Lone Pine, and it was absolutely incredible. It was an all inclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the sanctuary, and our tour guide, Rachael, was a fountain of knowledge, and such a lovely presence throughout the day. Just some of the things we got up to were kangaroo feeding, petting dingos, holding a python, koala, lizard and owl, as well as a raptor show and sheepdog show, and much more. We even got a goodie bag at the end with all our professional photos! I'd definitely recommend Lone Pine to anyone visiting Brisbane. And if you can spare the money, the Platinum Tour is definitely worth it!

We could have easily spent an entire day here and did spend most of the day but several critters were already sleeping for the day by the time we arrived since it was quite warm.
Our guide Rachel was very informative and patient with others in the small group that didn’t seem to want to follow directions and asked the same questions 10 times expecting a different answer.
We got up close to the koalas and held one and got great photos and videos.
If you want to have some personal experiences get there early and plan on a full day. We thought about going back but we had a lot to see in our 2 weeks in Queensland.
Highly recommend and be there when it opens

Just had the most incredible day at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, and I can't resist sharing the details! Nestled along the scenic Brisbane River, this wildlife haven offers a truly enchanting experience with some of Australia's most iconic creatures.
The highlight, undoubtedly, was getting up close and personal with the resident koalas. The chance to hold one of these furry ambassadors is not just a photo op but a genuinely heartwarming moment. The sheer charm and gentleness of these creatures leave you with a newfound appreciation for Australia's unique wildlife.
Kangaroos roam freely in designated areas, and feeding them is an absolute delight. It's a hands-on encounter that brings out the kid in you, and watching these marsupials hop around creates a sense of connection with the natural world.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary isn't just a destination; it's an immersive journey into Australia's natural wonders. Whether you're a wildlife enthusiast, a family looking for a day of fun and learning, or just someone wanting a break from the ordinary, this sanctuary checks all the boxes. Highly recommended!

This was the perfect place for me to relax in between doing First Responder presentations. It's peaceful, quiet, and very pretty overlooking the Brisbane River. The staff were chatty and happy so what more can you ask for! ????

Had the most pleasant time here! SO many koalas and you also get a huge variety of other animals - from various native birds, platypus, crocodiles, kangaroos, farm animals, wombats to snakes. You can also buy kangaroo food for $2 and feed them which was a cool experience!

We spent a week in Australia and drove past many road signs warning us about potential livestock along the roads, but we saw nothing.
As it was our last day here, we decided we needed to get a wildlife fix, and this place wasn't far from our motel.
The place was very busy, which wasn't unexpected, being school holidays, but in this case we were travelling without kids and didn't enjoy having to dodge thousands of wild animals at loose.
The park animals though, were well behaved and we enjoyed being able to get up close to them. The lunch meals were quick and simple and plenty of options for any diet. Just don't turn your back as the birds will steal it from the table in front of you.
On reflection, I would happily visit again, but outside school holidays.

Amazing up close experiences with some of Australia's top animals. Love taking friends here that come to visit, or just three little one on an activity day! The park is well maintained, and not crazy big which is nice.
