Crisps and wine together? Never tasted so good. And the cuvée chocolates, all made for a very quaffable experience. Elderton and Small Victories, stop 2 of our e-bike winery trail

Carolyn, our wine host, was professional, friendly, and genuinely knowledgeable. She read the room well and kept the tasting relaxed and engaging — we never felt rushed.
We sat at a large table beside a beautiful glass cabinet displaying Elderton’s range. Listen closely and you might hear the faint tap of the resident ghost quietly cheering on your selections.
The arrival is lovely: drive between the vines, park near the tennis courts, then wander along the garden path to the vine-covered entrance. A grand old character home and for the ladies the toilet/bathrooms are really nice
This was a top tasting experience of our trip. The $420 Helbig Shiraz is well worth the tasting, and for those more budget-conscious, The Command Shiraz ticks all the boxes at $75. Special mention for fortified lovers — don’t miss the 2024 Duke of Wellington Old Vine Shiraz VP $36.
For those staying at the Nuriootpa Caravan Park, it’s conveniently ..or dangerously?..just next door.
For palate reference: I generally prefer dark-coloured, smooth, full-bodied reds (Mad Bastard Cab Sav, Reschke Bull Trader reds, Peter Teakle Shiraz, Good Catholic Girls James Brazill Shiraz).

A favorite brand over the last twenty years, the visit (finally) to Barossa was highlighted by an incredible Elderton experience. The Command is a wine like few others…and experiencing the lineup leading up to it was just a joy. Kind staff and informative at every pour. Exceptional!!

If staff roll their eyes at you when you ask for a glass of water they probably shouldn't be in this kind of work! One staff said they would waive the tasting fee because of the purchases made by the group while the other server billed for it, with no remediation after mentioning this. We walked out with a tarnished impression of the brand, much better experience at other wineries in the region.

One of the best cellar door experiences I’ve had! I’ve been visiting wineries across Australia and New Zealand for over a decade, and this one really stands out.
The red is easily one of my all-time favourites — beautifully made and a joy to share with others. I also love that it’s a family-owned winery, now second generation, and originally started by a woman. You can really feel the heart behind the wine.
Can’t wait to come back. In the meantime, I'm getting frequent deliveries to home :))

Strong recommendation for both cellar door experience and the quality of Elderton wine. The ‘21 Command Shiraz is a benchmark wine for me. This is a family owned and run winery producing at the highest level. Bravo to Cameron and Team. From our group you have some loyal customers for life.

We popped in to visit a friend’s winery and left feeling like we’d won the wine lottery Cameron, the owner, took the time to show us around, share his stories, and pour some truly exceptional wines (generously, we might add!). It’s not every day you get to enjoy world-class wine with the person who made it, and we savoured every sip. Great wine, great company, and memories we’ll be toasting to for a long time.

We are delighted to hear that your visit was such a memorable experience. It was a pleasure to welcome you to the winery, and Cameron greatly enjoyed the opportunity to share both his wines and the stories behind them. We take great pride in crafting wines that reflect our passion and dedication, and it is truly rewarding to know they resonated with you. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back in the future. Until then, cheers to lasting memories and exceptional wine.

We booked the Elderton exceptional Wine Experience on recommendation from the Barossa Big 4 Holiday Park, where we had booked a powered site in our caravan for two nights.
The voucher we received from the park was a 2 for 1 deal, providing a $25 discount off the experience we chose. We also ordered a cheese, and a grilled focaccia and Ortiz anchovy plate (definitely order a side plate, especially if you haven’t had much to eat before your booking). We were able to taste 6 wines each, personalised to our personal tastes by our lovely and knowledgeable hostess, Carolyn. She provided lots of information about the history of Elderton and its family owners. We chatted about wine, the Barossa, and things in general. We found the entire experience to be very enjoyable, and unpretentious, as although we love to drink wine, we don’t consider ourselves to be connoisseurs.
We purchased three bottles from our tastings - the 2023 Merlot, 2024 Pinto Gris, and the 2024 Grenache Mintaro. The building was really lovely, with a wood fire burning. Another group had the sofas in front of the fireplace, which at first I was a little disappointed that we didn’t have that spot, but by the end of our tasting experience, I would have been burning up, as the reds really warmed us up! 🍷
We will definitely return and highly recommend Elderton Wines.

Winter escape activity. We loved visiting elderton wines. Set in a beautiful home style cellar door . The only advantage to the sun going down early in winter is spending golden hour with a glass of wine on their porch before close. Just lovely and relaxing. The staff were extremely friendly as well.

We had booked for the Exceptional Sites tasting, which we took in front of the fire at the historic Ashmead residence (now the cellar door) on a winter’s afternoon. The house itself is set in the middle to home block vineyard site, surround by vines, some quite ancient, so the setting is special.
Jodhi hosted us, guiding us through the range and throwing in a couple of unexpected treats along the way. We are familiar with much of the Elderton range, and so it was no surprise that the wines were excellent.
Equally, Jodhi was a warm and professional guide, whose knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for wine shone through. As we departed we spied her Australian 2023 Best Wine Communicator - Cellar Door award; based on our experience, that accolade was richly deserved.
Thanks Jodhi and Elderton for rounding our time in the Barossa with such a great tasting, and (as Kiwis) for the Pinot Noir banter!

Stunning Californian Bungalow, wooden floors, rugs, fire places and lovely wines and cheese platters. Lots of room inside with several areas to relax and enjoy. A lot of history to soak in too. Kids and dogs..not so much.
*addit...we brought friends back as we had such a lovely experience with the host. We were sadly disappointed second time. The older lady with the curly grey hair was so frosty. We had arrived at 3pm both days. The first day we had the fire stoked for us and no problems having a platter. The second visit we were declined a platter as they were "finished for the day". She cheerfully waved us off goodbye.

We enjoyed our wine and Cuvée chocolate tasting although the chocolate is overall a bit waxy tasting. It was still fun to have the pairing. The wines were all quite good.
A nice touch would be if the owner said a quick hello. We were the only ones in the tasting room when they walked by.

This time we hired car and decided to see three to four per day over a two day period in the Barrosa and Adelaide Hills.
Elderton was a wine we first encountered in 1989 and loved it and still do. So it was a must to see on our list. Others where Wolf Blas, closed for several days so no luck, Two Hands and Meltons.
Certainly Eldertons has the best cellar door I have ever seen. It's a beautiful old house and you get to try wine at the counter or seating in luxury.
The bathrooms are also fantastic and not the old tin sheds of the past I was seen in other wineries.
The lady on was very friendly as we were the only ones so far this day. All quiet in the area as tourists more interested in Bike races.
They have a tasting charge, all do, but waived if you buy. We like reds so my wife, I'm driving , does the tasting and selects a number that she thinks are just fantastic. Having just returned from France were wines are not full bodied and range from 45 to 500 Euro this was a great first start.
A nice case in the post for when we get home.

Thank you for offering your feedback. You have obviously enjoyed an experience with us previously and I am sorry that we were unable to accommodate you on this occasion.
Our tasting experiences are hosted inside however we do offer guests the opportunity to purchase a glass of wine or self-guided wine flight under our veranda whilst enjoying vineyard views, although I understand that these options did not appeal to you. At the time of your arrival, we were unexpectedly short staffed due to illness and only had one team member working who was due to greet other guests with prior bookings and was also managing incoming calls including bookings to be rescheduled. Whilst she was mindful to try and communicate this to your daughter, we do understand your disappointment and hope that you found an alternate venue to make the most of your day in the Barossa.
I apologise that you felt our team member was being lazy or perhaps unaccommodating, this was definitely not her intention and I hope that in this context you may give us the opportunity to welcome you again on another occasion.

We have been enjoying Elderton wine for approximately 15 years and it's our favorite label. As a result of our purchases, Phil (my husband) is an Elderton Commander. Along with this title is an invitation to the annual Commander's luncheon at the winery at Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley, with members of the Ashmead family and other lovers of Elderton Wines. Beautiful food along with outstanding wines is served throughout the afternoon. We have also stayed in the Elderton Accommodation in Nuriootpa while attending this fantastic afternoon and can recommend this to future travelers to the Barossa Valley. All purchases either by phone or online arrive safely on our doorstep within a week. The new Cellar Door is one of the best we have visited and the staff is second to none. Our love of the Elderton Wines is so great that we chose to purchase and serve it at our sons wedding and received many rave reviews from our guests.

The Ashmead Family are so generous with their time and will take you through the history of Elderton Estate as well as the Barossa itself, explaining the transition from traditional settlers, fortified wine making, and the modern Barossa that the Elderton Estate represents so well.
The Elderton Estate Cellar Door is headed up by a team of fantastic industry career staff that will take the time to walk you through the full range of current vintage and heirloom back vintage wines.
Elderton has a wonderful selection of entry level wine that you can enjoy right now, a gorgeous range of mid cellaring Estate wines, and their amazing range of top international competitive wines are a must in any cellar collection.
Try them all and buy a selection of white and reds to enjoy all year round or put down in anticipation of what is to come from careful cellaring.

I have been going to Elderton for about 30 years now, so the wines are no surprise any more, they're always great.
We visited mid-morning in the middle of the week. What a great time we had. As well as the cellar door manager the winemakers joined in as well.
They were extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the property and of course the wines. There were a few jovial remarks being thrown around as well.
The wines are excellent, and I use them as a go-to for dinner parties or BBQs.
Thoroughly recommend them.

It is very rare to write a review where the words ‘a privilege’ are used, but this is certainly one of them.
My partner and I attended the Retrospective Tasting at Elderton with one of the owners Allister Ashmead on 25th Feb 2023.
Aside from the wonderful wines and delicious foods sampled on the day, Allister and his Team made the entire trip for us from Queensland an absolute joy. It was warming to hear not only the successes of the family as wine makers, but the trials that come with their entire heritage. Elderton has the perfect mix of nostalgia and family – this was delivered to us at a wonderful tasting experience that both my partner and I agree was a real privilege.
Overall the Barossa is a wonderful, honest and comfortable experience – Elderton exemplify this and we look forward to many more trips to their cellar door.

What a location! Drive through the wine fields to get to the old homestead turned cellar door. Great staff and a cute old ginger kitty, this place has lots of history and is well renovated. The wines are smooth and our favourite of the region now. Sit by the fireplace for a warm atmosphere on a comfy couch

Very stylish, cosy and welcoming place. The tasting included some exceptional and yet affordable wines.
I would highly recommend this cellar door.

The winery hosted us with a wide range of tastings in both white and red. The hits were the reds named after the winemakers.

After being ignored by a rather famous winery across the road ????. I trusted my Google recommendation & am so glad I went to Elderton. Cameron is an excellent host & produced some wonderful stories and in-depth knowledge of the products. Beautiful surroundings and absolutely delicious wines. Spent way more than I expected, but so totally worth it ????
