Hobart’s #1 tour on Tripadvisor!
If this tour is unavailable, our alternative tour will be offered (Tour 2). Ile Des Phoques and Circumnavigation tours are offered on alternate days. If this tour is not offered, select the Circumnavigation tour. If tours are fully booked, please call our office and place your name on our wait list. It is common to have last minute seats open up!
Join us on the most unforgettable day tour, cruising the renowned coastline of Maria Island and Tasmania’s stunning East Coast. Our shuttle bus can pick you up from Hobart and drive you to our departure location at Triabunna. If you have your own transport, simply meet us at Triabunna and let us take you on the adventure of a lifetime.
Your tour will depart from the Triabunna marina (approximately 1-hour and 15-minutes from Hobart), and includes a 4-hour scenic cruise of Maria Island’s stunning coastline with a 2-hour stay on the island including a gentle walk of Maria’s World Heritage listed convict settlement.
The Ile Des Phoques has been our favourite place to cruise ever since we began in 2007. The Ile Des Phoques (French for Island of Seals) is an absolute haven for marine life and has been declared one of the best cold water dives in the world. Your cruise to the Ile Des Phoques will capture the stunning views of Maria Island, including famous landmarks such as the Painted Cliffs and Fossil Cliffs, spring-fed waterfalls, limestone sea caves, cliff-top stalactites, Bishop & Clerk mountain range and the stunning granite cliffs of Maria Island’s east coast. At the northern tip of Maria Island the cruise will head North to the Ile Des Phoques, a 30min boat ride from Maria Island. On the way to this remarkable granite island you can see albatross, dolphins, Australian fur seals and whales (depending on the time of year) as well as majestic panoramic views of Maria Island and the Freycinet Peninsula. *Note, if poor weather prevents the cruising to the Ile Des Phoques, the cruise will be changed to circumnavigate Maria Island.
Lunch is provided on the tour from our cafe as a large healthy salad bowl. A variety of salad lunch options include; chicken breast coated in pesto aioli, smoked salmon, roast beef, leg ham or vegetarian/vegan. If a salad bowl is not for your liking, please let us know and you may choose anything else from our cafe to the value of $15pp (cash refunds not given if under $15). You may use this credit to purchase salad rolls or select from our range of freshly made sandwiches for children if you wish. You are also welcome to bring your own lunch on the day. Lunch is enjoyed on the boat whilst at anchor in an idyllic remote location at Maria Island. A complimentary wine or beer is offered for lunch. Additional alcoholic drinks are charged per serve. A large selection of cakes are provided for morning tea from our cafe as well as complimentary water, tea, coffee, orange juice, soda water and soft drinks!
In the afternoon, both tours will dock at Darlington. The perfect way to compliment your cruise is to stretch your legs and enjoy a guided tour through Darlington’s fascinating collection of preserved convict buildings, learn about the town’s remarkable history and come face to face with Maria Island’s resident wombats. If history is not for you, then simply soak up the sun on Darlington’s white sandy beach or swim/snorkel in the waters of Maria Island’s marine reserve.
Tour departs Triabunna at 9:00am and returns at 4:30pm.
Customers are encouraged to park at our cafe in the heart of Triabunna (21 Vicary Street). Check-in will occur at the cafe from 8:15am, after which we will make our way to board our tour boat at 8:40am.

We will guarantee that if we do not meet or exceed your expectation, we will refund your money no questions asked.
One tour … but two cruises? What’s the difference?
After touring to Maria Island for over 10 years, we have developed a unique cruise and walk day tour with two distinct cruise options. The difference between each of the options is only in the destination of the cruise. The circumnavigation cruise will take you on a journey around the entire coastline of Maria Island and you can’t possibly see any more of Maria Island in a single day than this tour! The Ile Des Phoques (island of seals) cruise will head north to a remote granite island where we visit the most playful Australian fur seals and explore the inside of the biggest granite seas caves in Tasmania, possibly Australia. These caves are world class natural wonders and leave everyone totally speechless when inside them on the boat. Upon returning from the Ile Des Phoques, we visit the famous Fossil Cliffs and Painted Cliffs before docking at Darlington.
Each cruise will return to Maria Island for a relaxed afternoon guided walk of the Darlington convict settlement, exploring history and the island’s friendly wildlife.
Which cruise is scheduled?
As we only have one boat, we are only able to operate one tour on each day. We have scheduled the tours to alternate between the two cruises over the calendar days of summer. Please visit our calendar page to identify which cruise has been chosen for any given day. Please note that if poor weather prevents us from cruising to the Ile Des Phoques, the cruise will be changed to circumnavigate the coastline of Maria Island.
Minimum Numbers
Due to the high operational costs of our tours, we do require a minimum of 6 adult passengers for each tour. We are always hopeful that we will reach this requirement on every tour, however if we have not yet met the requirement within 48hrs days of the tour date, we will contact you to discuss the flexibility and options of moving to a different day.
Payments
Payments are now taken upfront with confirmation of your booking. Maria Island Cruises accepts credit cards (Visa or Mastercard), PayPal or Direct Deposit (EFT) payments with each booking. We do not accept cash on the day. Credit card details are stored in a secure online booking system and are removed after the completion of your tour. Adjustments to bookings paid via credit cards can be made at anytime without any extra charges. Adjustments to bookings paid via PayPal or EFT payments will be made on the day of your tour. Refunds do not incur any fees or charges.
Cancelling your tour
If you would like to cancel your booking, you are welcome to do so. Please let us know before the day of the tour. We are very reasonable in providing refunds to customers, we simply ask that you notify us within 24hrs. We do not accept cancellations on the day but will provide a voucher for 50% of the cost of your booking for you to redeem at a later date. Credit cards will be charged if you do not show up without notifying our office. Please note (important) we do not cancel tours because of rain. We only cancel tours if strong wind and swell prevent us from safely and comfortably cruising around Maria Island. If you wake up to rain on the day of your tour, please note that unless conditions on the water are rough, we will still be cruising and will not accept cancellations on the day because of rainy or overcast conditions. Rain is a good thing here as we typically have low annual rainfall! The mountains, cliffs and waterfalls of Maria Island all look amazing with mist and cloud around them and we are equally excited to tour on wet and rainy days. Lastly, please feel free to call our office on 0362571300 (8am-6pm) if you would like to discuss the weather or your booking.
Refunds
If you have cancelled and are required a refund, we are happy to do so without additional charges. Refunds can be given back to you credit cards, be made by EFT or via Paypal. If cancellations are made inside 24hrs (the day before) our staff will have already begun to cater for your tour. In this case, we will offer a 50% refund on the total booking cost with a voucher for the remaining amount to be taken at a later date. No refunds will be given for cancellations made by customers on the day of travel. Instead a voucher will be issued to be redeemed at a later date. Cancellations made by our business will allow for full refunds at any time with no extra charges.
Lunch
Lunch is provided on the tour from our cafe as a large healthy salad bowl. Weather
As you would expect, sometimes the weather does effect our plan for cruising at short notice. If the weather does not allow for a cruise to Ile Des Phoques, the cruise will be changed to circumnavigate Maria Island. If we cannot circumnavigate the island, we will construct the next best cruise itinerary to ensure you remain safe and comfortable. We have a very good idea of the weather 7 days before the cruise date. If there are any concerns about changing the plan of the tour, or cancelling we will let you know. If you have your own concerns about the weather, PLEASE give us a call. Our staff are trained to read the local weather conditions at Maria Island with our cruise in mind. We only operate the tours in gentle weather. Please also note, we do not cancel tours because of rain. We only cancel tours if strong wind and swell prevent us from safely and comfortably cruising around Maria Island.
Travel Sickness
If you are concerned about sea sickness, there is a pharmacy in Triabunna where you can purchase motion sickness medication. Please inform our boat staff if you are susceptible to motion sickness and they will allow you onto the boat first and allocate you the last row of seats (at the rear of the boat). This is where we advise people to sit if they are prone to motion sickness. Please do not choose to sit at the bow (front) of the boat. We also have ginger tablets and wrist bands (they work!) so please also ask for these before we depart. It is not common to feel motion sick on our boat, but always best to take precautions.

The highlight of our day was undoubtedly the Ile Des Phoques cave and the seal encounters. Additionally, the painted cliffs and Maria Island presented remarkable natural beauty. The provided lunch was exceptionally flavorful and generously portioned. The staff demonstrated remarkable friendliness and approachability. We extend our sincere gratitude for an outstanding day.
The entire trip was excellent. We were lucky enough to see dolphins, seals, and the stunning Rainbow Caves. We also enjoyed a guided walk around Maria Island and took plenty of photos of the amazing wildlife, especially the cute wombats.
The staff were outstanding, the lunch was excellent, and the whole experience was memorable and enjoyable. A big thank you to Racheal, Micheal, and Steve for making the trip so special. Highly recommended!
The history walk and talk was fun and informative. The wombats were so healthy and not at all shy.
Highly recommend.
Seeing the wildlife up close was a real highlight—wombats casually wandering around, Cape Barren geese, and so much birdlife. It felt like stepping into their world. The seals were another standout, playful and full of character, especially watching them out on the rocks and in the water.
The caves and cliffs were absolutely stunning, with the colours and textures of the rock formations creating such a unique landscape. Cruising into the caves was unforgettable—the light hitting the water inside was just magic.
Everything about the day felt well-paced and relaxed, giving us time to take it all in without feeling rushed. It’s one of those experiences that stays with you long after you leave.
Highly recommend to anyone wanting to see some of Tasmania’s most beautiful and untouched natural scenery—you won’t be disappointed.
From start to finish we were so well looked after by the incredibly friendly and knowledgable crew. We were able to cruise for a couple of hours, as well as go for a walk around Darlington and explore the convict history. Loads of wombats and wildlife was encounted as we walked about.
Lunch and morning tea was delicious, the whole day was well organised and relaxed.
We were happy to see that the boat was well equipped and maintained and were made to feel welcome from the moment we stepped on board.
Michael’s commentary was interesting, the scenery was spectacular and it was obvious how much he cared about the environment.
His deckhand Freya did an incredible job looking after everyone.
Morning tea and lunch were both delicious and the accompanying glass of wine was appreciated.
We enjoyed the 2 hour guided tour of the island with Freya learning about the history and spotting native wildlife.
Thank you Michael and Freya for such a wonderful day!
Food and drinks were above expectations.
Overall, this is a fantastic cruise. The highlight of our trip. We highly recommend it. Thank you Michael and Ruby.
PS - Ruby you worked your arse off!
Lunch and morning tea were plentiful and delicious.
Felt completely safe - would 100% recommend and would do it again. Thank you Michael and Xavier, it was the highlight of our trip.
Steve, the Skipper toured us around the Island pointing out the local wildlife, Island topography & geological highlights. We would not have believed an Island such as this could be so diverse & interesting without experiencing it first hand.
After we arrived at Darlington, Molly, the Guide led us on an interesting hike & brief history lesson of the area with tales of life in the early to late 1800’s from early convict settlement to an attempted holiday destination, and now the recent establishment of the area as a wildlife conservation area through “negotiations” between the local fishermen & the wildlife conservation officers.
Steve is an experienced sea hand who has obviously spent considerable time with the locals understanding the history.
Molly is a recent Graduate in Geology from the University of Tasmania who has spent time understanding the local history, plants & wildlife before embarking on her life dream.
A great & worthwhile experience to understand the Island preservation & development, or as they say locally “to the Island, from the Island, from the Island”.
Every effort was made to keep us comfortable during the cruise. The lovely crew, Freya and Bella, made every single passenger feel they were important, chatting with them and looking out for their welfare. They noticed if we were cold and, as well as supplying extra jackets and hot drinks to help keep us warm, constantly took the time to raise and lower the plastic sides to maximise visibility at strategic points, yet stop us from becoming too cold. They answered every question with knowledge and patience. One person became unexpectedly seasick, but Bella and Freya were very discreet about cleaning up after them, ministering to them gently, all with a smile. They were just amazing, and nothing seemed to be a problem for them.
Whoever caters for this tour deserves a medal, too. The morning tea was a delightful selection of cakes and slices, and the salad lunches were beautifully prepared and extremely tasty - absolutely outstanding quality.
Walking on the island and hearing more from Freya about its human history was fascinating, too, and we were all surprised when a Tasmanian devil (equally surprised by all the people it suddenly encountered) shot out into the crowd in broad daylight and went scampering off down the hill. Seeing Cape Barren geese was a real treat, and there was no shortage of pademelons. The Forester kangaroos were a little more elusive, but some of our group saw them. The wombats, unfortunately, stayed hidden from us.
And on a final note: my friend accidentally left behind her water bottle in a woven cloth holder that she was rather fond of. Freya and the park rangers back in Triabunna ensured that the next day’s cruise to the island looked out for it - and called my friend when it was located. We had left Triabunna by then, but arrangements were made for the holder to be mailed back to her. It was waiting for her back in Queensland when she arrived home. Kudos to all the crew and everyone involved! Thank you so much for a tour that was memorable for all the right reasons.
We were blessed with great weather and then it got better !
Two whales breaching in front of us and then coming right up to the boat .
Masses of dolphins leaping in and out of the boats wake , Captain Mike doing loops to encourage them further and on it continued for ages !
This was after our stop at Ilse Des Phoques , guaranteed seals but the experience of the smaller juveniles playing in the water and in and around the boat was great .
The boat was comfortable with Captain Mike so competent & knowledgeable in commentary of the area.
Offsider Xavier led the tour of Maria , knew his stuff , we took in the islands convict past and subsequent commercial activities , very interesting and my partner saw wombats ! which she keen on.
Highly recommend the experience with this Company , everything from initial organisation , great lunch on board with refreshments .
Great attention to detail about expected days activities which turned out above & beyond expectations ! . Mike & Xavier were blown away with the days encounters on the water , no reason why it couldn't happen again !
We had the opportunity to see seals, dolphins, whales, eagles, pied oyster birds, wombats, padamelons, and more! Fantastic wildlife viewing experience and nothing felt rushed. I highly recommend this as you cannot reach the Island of Seals without a guided tour.
About the crew: Michael, Xavier, and Ruby were all so kind and helpful throughout the entire trip and went above and beyond! I was sick on the boat and Michael made sure that I had a safe way of getting home. The staff drove me to my accommodation and checked in on me even afterwards. I highly recommend this company for tours.
Tips to know: You spend a lot of time in the boat so make sure to take sea-sickness medication ahead of time! They have plenty of beverages on board and sick bags as well as towels and sunscreen. Make sure you pack light snacks as the tour is long and there are no shops or cafes on Maria island. If you are sensitive to smells or get migraines easily, make sure you sit at the top of the boat when going to the Island of Seals because the seals can be smelled from quite a distance LOL.
Thank you everyone, we really, really enjoyed this cruise. 10/10
We had perfect weather conditions allowing us to enter both sea caves at the Ile des Phoques (twice) and Also the stalagmite cave on Maria island. The penal settlement on Maria island dates back before Port Arthur and has an amazing history. A must do trip!
Molly guided us on the land walk and we came across a number of wildlife (wombat, echidnas, etc)
And since the boat was smaller than the other service boat, we had a cozy group. No delays as well.
Overall, would recommend it.
You really should dress very warm and be ok with large waves abd getting wet. We went in spring, and even coming from a cold country I was surprised how cold it was. Several guess got seasick. The boat is covered but they open the sides and you will feel the wind and water very strongly, so please prepare extra well! It's worth it, just make sure you are up for it.
This time we had my parents with us and we wanted to show them the best of Tassie so we booked another Tour of Maria Island.
Dad has a wheel chair and can walk assisted with walking sticks, the staff helped my father board the boat & assisted with his wheel chair for the Maria Island 2 hour walk.
Both tours are fantastic, beautiful full day of touring, we saw whales, seals, dolphins, eagles and on the island we saw wombats, wallabies & cape baron Geese.
Great value, lovely staff, tasty fresh lunch & morning tea.
This turned out to be one of the best ever days we had on our trip to Tasmania. The boat itself had plenty of viewing areas, and room to move around freely to photograph the scenery and wildlife. Michael the tour operator and his crew were amazing. They provided an abundance of delicious food and drinks and were very attentive on the whole trip. Michael added much information through the trip on the history of the area, seals, interesting rock formations, beautiful sea caves and the behaviour of the local and migrating wildlife to name a few.
We would thoroughly recommend this tour to everyone young or old. Don’t hesitate!
