She talked about the geology and local flora and fauna.
The first part of the day involved a visit to a private station. The views from the top of the “jump up” were spectacular.
The second part of the day was a visit to the Dinosaur Stampede where the stampede guide gave us an interesting talk about all the fossilised footprints that were at the exhibit.
The whole 8 hours of the day passed very quickly.
It was a great day out!
We were picked up at our hotel at the arranged time.
Bec was our guide again today - again she was informative , knowledgeable and passionate about the area and what we were going to see.
She took us to the museum where she handed us over to the museum guides who took us to their sections and explained what was happening. A very interesting visit to the fossil preparation lab.
Followed by a look back at how some of the fossils were originally discovered.
Followed by a look at a relocated fossilised riverbank complete with footprints.
A well organised trip, good food and our driver Peter? was exceptional. Very knowledgeable, excellent commentary and genuinely interested in the Conservation Park and his job.
If you are travelling to Winton (and you definitely should visit this lovely town) with or without wheels, we could not more highly recommend you join at least one Red Dirt Tour! Have a great time in friendly Winton 😃.
Everything is included and each day was one to remember. Highly recommended.
Loved both the tours we did ..
Best of luck for the future xx
We took a tour with Bec to the Dinosaur Stampede. Had we taken ourselves, what could have been a very long day of whining in the heat, quiet as we drove the long dirt roads, was instead an absolutely fantastic day thanks to Bec & Red Dirt. Bec was an amazing tour guide; incredibly generous with her knowledge of the local area, history, plants, and animals, making the day incredibly enjoyable with her enthusiasm. The catering was good; fresh and light - exactly what we wanted in the warm sun.
If we had more time, we would have loved a few of the other tours. Thank you Red Dirt Tours team. You're awesome.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Spaghetti (Bec will understand the reference).
Our visit was mid September. We booked the Ultimate Dinosaur Tour - that consists of 3 parts. It gets HOT out there so I advise to do as we did, book the first 'tour' of the day (ours started 09:00am). The 'tour' starts with a walk across the rim (outdoors in the sun) to the Laboratory & Collection facilities. Very interesting to actually see professionals processing fossils and an insight into the time, patience and skill needed to 'extract' the fossil from the large chunk of earth.
Back at the centre we watched a film of the field site, extraction and processing with the actual end result, constructed dinosaurs on display.
From there we boarded the tram out to Dinosaur Canyon. Outstanding!. Basically they dug up and transported (over 3 years) a section of outback Australia containing multiple 'footprints', preserved it, put it into the building on display.
From there you can wander down into the canyon.
Highly recommend a visit here.
The fossil history is extraordinary!
You get to touch the thigh bone of a dinosaur, that's 80 million years old.
The staff are extremely well briefed and provide excellent explanations of the theories around what we were seeing.
Got to see the bone lab were volunteers were actually removing bones from the earth.
Make sure you bring a big hat and lots of water. By the mid afternoon it was very hot and dry. Flies weren't too bad but personal repellant is probably a good idea
Vicki knew everything about the fauna and wildlife, the property and history. An exceptional hostess and tour leader.
Would've loved to do the other day tours on offer - will be booking for our next trip.
Vehicle are well presented and Professionally Driven, Scrumptious Cheese platter and Beverages were well accompanied with a Spectacular Sunset over a thriving Landscape
Highly Recommended
Vicki collected us at our motel and was so informative about the town itself (WINTON), the local flora and fauna, the subtle effects of changes to climate (eg later rains) on the flora and consequently the fauna and had us engaged from the get go. So much better than driving ourselves out, as we had done previously.
The rifts walk and sunset from Rangelands were absolutely magical and provided lots of opportunities for photos whilst also having drinks and nibbles.
Thank you Vicki, we are very grateful for such great experiences.
Best wishes
Sandra, Bruce and Maria
The bus is a big modern and comfortable 4x4 bus, carefully driven across the rugged terrain to a very modern facility housing the world’s only dinosaur stampede.
Jon, our guide while at the display, is very passionate about what the does and loves to share his knowledge on to topic before showing you the main event, over 3k dinosaur footprints which really makes you think and visualise the time these ancient beings were around
10/10 great tour, would recommend
Food for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea well done.
Catering was lovely also.
Red dirt provided a very healthy fresh lunch, drinks and morning and afternoon teas.
We could have stayed longer in Winton as there is so much to see and we could have listened and learnt from Bec forever. Thanks for an amazing 2 days.
