Private stargazing sessions can run 1-2 hours depending on group size (5-10.) Historic tours can run for up to 1 hour. A stargazing session and tour together can run up to 3 hours, depending on group size (5-10.) Due to the variability of weather and visibility conditions, we will contact you by noon on the day of your scheduled event with information on weather and options, and allow you to reschedule or cancel if desired. If you do not contact us to request a reschedule or cancellation at least 48 hours before your scheduled night, we will proceed with your selected activities, and no refunds will be given. Start times are variable, depending on sunset and object visibility, with nights in the summer starting later. Historic tours will be run during the daytime and early evening hours, before sunset, followed by stargazing. Our astronomers will always make an effort to provide an exciting and interactive experience, regardless of weather conditions and limited viewing. Participant Code of Conduct and Behaviour Clause This clause outlines the expected behaviour of all participants (referred to herein as “the Client” or “Participants”) during private stargazing sessions, outreach tours, and any related activities organised by ANU – RSAA Outreach. Adherence to this Code of Conduct is mandatory for the safety of all attendees, the protection of sensitive astronomical equipment, and the overall quality of the viewing experience. 1. General Conduct and Authority 1.1. Respectful Behaviour: Participants must maintain a courteous and respectful demeanour towards all staff, guides, and other attendees at all times. Aggressive, abusive, discriminatory, or harassing behaviour will not be tolerated. 1.2. Guide Authority: All instructions and directions issued by the designated tour guide or staff member must be followed immediately and without argument, particularly those relating to safety, movement within the viewing area, or the operation of equipment. 1.3. Substance Use: The consumption of alcohol or any illegal substance that impairs judgment, coordination, or behaviour is strictly prohibited prior to or during the tour. Any Participant deemed by the guide to be visibly intoxicated will be refused participation. 2. Equipment, Safety, and Viewing Environment 2.1. Equipment Handling: Astronomical equipment (including telescopes, mounts, cameras, and optics) is highly sensitive and valuable. Participants are strictly prohibited from touching, moving, leaning on, or interfering with any equipment without the express prior permission and direct supervision of the guide. 2.2. Maintaining Darkness: The ability to observe celestial objects requires absolute darkness. Participants must adhere to the following rules: No Unauthorised Lights: Do not use flashlights, mobile phone screens, camera flashes, or any other source of white light without explicit permission from the guide. Only approved, low-intensity red-light flashlights are permitted when necessary. Observation Etiquette: Remain quiet during observation periods to allow all Participants to focus and hear instructions. 2.3. Safety and Movement: Participants must remain within designated viewing areas and pathways at all times. Stargazing locations can involve uneven terrain and significant trip hazards in the dark. Participants move at their own risk and must exercise extreme caution. 3. Breach of Conduct and Tour Termination 3.1. Right of Termination: ANU – RSAA Outreach, through its staff or designated guide, reserves the right to terminate the tour or request the immediate departure of any Participant who violates this Code of Conduct, fails to follow instructions, or poses a safety risk to themselves, staff, or equipment. 3.2. No Refund: In the event that a tour is terminated due to a breach of this Code of Conduct, the Client acknowledges and agrees that no refund (full or partial) will be provided for the booked tour or associated services. 3.3. Damage Liability: The Client is responsible for any damage to equipment or property caused intentionally or through clear negligence by any member of their booked party, and agrees to reimburse ANU – RSAA Outreach for the repair or replacement costs of such damage. By confirming a booking, the Client agrees to ensure that all members of their party adhere to this Code of Conduct.
