A long-form coast-to-vineyard walk along the Willunga Basin Trail, with a lesson on risk management and emergency response. This Hike is part of KINDRED; a day hike series for women on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Kindred is a guided hiking program for women who want to deepen their confidence, strengthen their connection to nature, and build real capability outdoors – without the intimidation, ego, or competitiveness that often surrounds adventure spaces.

This is steady, soulful bushwalking paired with practical outdoor skills and personal development themes designed to help you expand, inside and out. Led by qualified female guides, each walk is structured to help you feel safe, seen, and supported while learning the skills that make nature feel natural – packing, planning, navigation, risk management, and trail confidence.

Destination: From Maslins Beach to McLaren Vale

Distance: 12.5kms with 254m elevation gain

Duration: 6hours (9am – 3pm)

This guided walk travels from Maslin Beach to McLaren Vale, covering 12.5km with approximately 254 metres of elevation gain. The walk offers a varied landscape and a strong sense of journey, moving from open coastline through to rural trails and vineyards.

After meeting in McLaren Vale, the group is transported to the starting point at Maslin Beach. From here, the walk begins by heading north along the beach before transitioning inland through a mix of coastal trails and scrub. The final section follows bike paths through vineyards, arriving back into McLaren Vale.

This walk is rated Moderate–Hard and is suited to women with a reasonable level of fitness who are comfortable walking for several hours across changing terrain. The walk runs from 9:00am to 3:00pm, allowing time to move steadily, pause, and take in the shift from coast to countryside.

Skills & Learning Focus

This walk includes the third learning focus of the program, centred on emergency awareness, risk assessment, and decision-making.

Along the way, we’ll explore:

  • Emergency basics and decision-making on the trail

  • What to do if you lose the track or become disoriented

  • Assessing conditions, including weather, terrain, and group energy

  • Staying calm under pressure using grounding techniques

  • Emergency equipment, communication tools, and how to call for help

  • Understanding trip intention documents and safety planning

  • Safe solo walking, including personal boundaries and check-in systems

These learnings are integrated into the walk to support confidence, preparedness, and self-trust in outdoor environments.
