Itinerary
Day 1: Broome – Fitzroy Crossing
In Derby, the administrative town of West Kimberley with tropical flair, we visit its main attraction with a dark past: the Prison Tree. Aboriginal prisoners were once held in the hollow trunk of this ancient boab tree. Today, the gnarled giant is under protection, and out of respect for its history, it should no longer be entered. We then travel comfortably along the Great Northern Highway toward our destination for the day: Fitzroy Crossing.
Overnight: Fitzroy River Lodge
Day 2: Fitzroy Crossing – Kununurra (B)
Today starts with a visit to Geikie Gorge National Park. During a scenic boat trip through the 14 km-long, up to 30 m-deep gorge, there’s a chance to spot freshwater crocodiles and admire remnants of an ancient, uplifted coral reef. We then continue to Halls Creek, a town shaped by the gold rush of 1885. A short detour takes us to the impressive China Wall – a natural vertical quartz formation up to 5 meters high, formed by erosion, not human hands. Traveling along the Great Northern Highway between the Durack and Carr Boyd Ranges, we reach today’s destination: Kununurra.
Overnight: Kununurra Country Club Resort
Day 3: El Questro & Wyndham (B)
Early in the morning, we drive to El Questro Wilderness Park, where a short walk leads us through one of the region’s spectacular gorges. We continue along the Great Northern Highway between the Durack and Carr Boyd Ranges to Wyndham – the northernmost town in Western Australia. From the Five Rivers Lookout, we enjoy breathtaking views over the Ord, Forrest, King, Durack, and Pentecost Rivers, as well as the Cambridge Gulf and surrounding mangrove swamps and tidal flats. Depending on the season, we visit Marglu Billabong in Parry Lagoons Nature Reserve – an important bird sanctuary home to over 20,000 birds. Later, we stop at The Grotto – a hidden waterhole at the base of a small but picturesque gorge. Surrounded by steep rock walls, it is fed by a 15-meter waterfall during the rainy season. Return to Kununurra.
Overnight: Kununurra Country Club Resort
Day 4: Ord River Boat Tour (B)
Around midday, we’re picked up from the hotel and driven to Lake Argyle. We make a brief stop at the historic Durack Homestead Museum – a replica built from the original stones of the family’s home. A nearby lookout point offers expansive views over the vast Lake Argyle. The 55 km-long boat ride back to Kununurra passes through spectacular landscapes, offering many opportunities to spot diverse flora and fauna. A colorful sunset rounds off the experience.
Overnight: Kununurra Country Club Resort
Day 5: Bungle Bungle Scenic Flight (B/L)
Today’s excursion promises an unforgettable experience. We discover the impressive rock formations of the Bungle Bungles both by air and on foot. The scenic flight provides amazing views over Lake Argyle, the Carr Boyd Range, and vast cattle stations. As we approach, a magical sandstone landscape unfolds. A 4WD drive and short hike take us to Cathedral Gorge, surrounded by beehive-shaped rock domes. During a picnic lunch, we marvel at the enormous “beehive” formations. On the return flight, enjoy views of the Argyle Diamond Mine and the rugged Osmand Range.
Overnight: Kununurra Country Club Resort
Day 6: Kununurra – Katherine (B)
Today, we say goodbye to Kununurra and Western Australia. Soon after, we cross the border into the Northern Territory. Traveling along the Victoria Highway, we continue comfortably to Katherine.
Overnight: Knotts Crossing Resort
Day 7: Katherine – Cooinda (B)
After breakfast, we begin with a 2-hour boat cruise through the spectacular Katherine Gorge – a wonderful experience with stunning scenery and the opportunity to view Aboriginal rock art. Via the Kakadu Highway, we reach Kakadu National Park. At Nourlangie Rock, we discover ancient galleries featuring Aboriginal art up to 20,000 years old.
Overnight: Gagudju Lodge Cooinda
Day 8: Kakadu – Darwin (B)
A breathtaking cruise through Yellow Waters gives us a rare chance to observe numerous wildlife species in their natural habitat. During the dry season, the area becomes a vital stopover for many birds, and we’ll also spot crocodiles up close. At Ubirr Rock – in the heart of Kakadu National Park – we’ll have time to admire the world’s oldest rock art and take in the panoramic view across the park. Another stop at the Mamukala Wetlands offers the chance to watch thousands of magpie geese – a stunning UNESCO-listed natural heritage site. In the evening, we arrive in Darwin, where the unforgettable tour ends at the pre-booked accommodation.
