Step Back in Time on a Historic Carriage Journey
Immerse yourself in the enchanting atmosphere of 19th-century Hobart. Our exclusive horse-drawn carriage tours offer a magical one-hour journey through the charming, winding streets of historic Battery Point and the vibrant Salamanca Place. 🐴
Discover Australia’s Best-Preserved Colonial Village
Battery Point is a rare Australian treasure, boasting an incredibly preserved variety of early colonial architecture. As you clip-clop along the narrow lanes, you will marvel at grand stone mansions with sprawling gardens standing proudly alongside quaint workers’ cottages built right on the streetscape. It feels just like a classic English village transported to the heart of Tasmania.
An Unmatched Sightseeing Experience
Relax in our elegant vis-a-vis landau carriage, guided by a professional driver in authentic livery. This unique vantage point allows you to truly appreciate the beauty and fine details of this historic suburb in a way that driving or walking simply cannot match. We pace our journey perfectly so you can absorb the rich atmosphere, snap incredible photos, and enjoy a few exciting moments with our signature “thrill up the hill”! 📸
Tour Highlights & Inclusions
- Historic Hampden Road: Travel through the former shopping centre of Battery Point, offering spectacular views of Mount Wellington (often capped with snow!).
- Architectural Wonders: Admire a stunning, eclectic mix of Georgian, Victorian, and Federation architecture.
- Authentic Carriage Ride: Experience genuine 19th-century style transport with a professional, liveried driver. 🎩
Booking & Pricing Information
This tour is highly recommended for adults and older children looking to explore Hobart’s rich heritage. Please note the following booking guidelines:
- Prices are based on a minimum of 2 adults. Please select ‘1’ in the booking box if you are booking for 2 adults or travelling solo.
- A special group price is available for exactly 4 adults (priced per person).
- Families are warmly welcome! Child pricing applies to children under 15 years, and infants under 2 years travelling on laps are free of charge.
Departure & Location Details
Our usual departure point is from the end of Salamanca Place, opposite the Ball & Chain Grill. After 3pm on Saturdays, as the market is packing up, we depart from Brooke St Pier (where the MONA ferry leaves from).
Please note: Departure times are approximate and can be affected by weather, traffic, road closures, and other factors out of our control. If we are expected to depart more than 10 minutes after our scheduled departure time, we will advise you.
Weather Policy
If the weather forecast is looking severe, we will make a decision to cancel early in the day and let you know by phone by 9am. We always do our best to run our tours but, this is Tassie and the weather can change without warning. If there are only light showers, we can raise the roof of the carriage to keep you dry. However, we may need to cancel your tour at the last moment if the weather turns suddenly. Please see our General Terms & Conditions for Cancellation Policy.
What to Bring
It’s always a good idea to bring a jacket (waterproof preferably). We do have a blanket to keep you warm but it can be cool at any time of the year. We also recommend a hat and sunscreen, especially in summer. Tassie sun is notoriously strong and you will get sunburnt very easily. Definitely bring along a camera! For the grown-ups, if you’re thirsty, we can order drinks for you. We prefer if young children do not eat and/or drink on the carriage.

Our guide and driver was very knowledgeable and fun to interact with. Even after our tour ended we chatted about the beauty and history of Hobart, the horses Soxy and Hank (which are magnificent creatures) and ideal places to visit.
We can’t recommend this tour highly enough.
The carriage was beautiful and the horses really lovely.
The man driving the carriage was so knowledgeable about the Battery Point area and was dressed up in a tail and top hat
A great way to see Hobart
Horses are like their family, not overworked and very well cared for!
And they are super cute with the crochet ear covers!
Would certainly recommend
I thoroughly enjoyed doing it on a horse trip; there’s something incredibly relaxing and romantic about seeing the city this way, far removed from the hustle of cars or walking tours. The horses were magnificent and well-cared for, and the carriage itself was comfortable and elegant.
Highly recommend this unique way to discover Hobart’s history and beauty—whether you’re visiting solo, as a couple, or with family. It’s a memorable, peaceful adventure that I’d do again in a heartbeat! 5 stars for me!
The horses are superbly behaved and trained wonderfully. It is easy to see that they are well cared for and loved dearly.
Communication was clear and up to date.
Highly recommend this tour to all. Such a wonderful Hobart experience. 🐴💗
Thoroughly recommend taking this tour for anyone.
We cannot tell you enough how amazing the carriage ride was along Salamanca waterfront . From Emily’s infectious happy smile and Steve’s charismatic nature and wealth of knowledge to the patience of Hank and Soxy.
Best $60 spent for the 2 of us.
Highly Recommended.
5 stars
Wow.Awesome.Fantastic.Nostalgic to say the least.
Steve was our guide, and he was superb, the knowledge that Steve gave us about Battery Hill was mind blowing. Such a wonderful gentleman.
Sharon is the lovely lady who took the booking and arranged our morning tea. Sharon was so wonderful in making sure my treats were gluten free as I am coeliac. Nothing was too much trouble for her to do.
I absolutely recommend doing the carriage ride. If you don’t have time for the longer rides they do shorted ones.
We will absolutely do this again when we are back in Hobart.
Thank-you Sharon and Steve for making my birthday memorable
Oh wait, no, not horse carriage, we had Unicorn carriage!!!!
It was great, and was absolutely magical.
You can take wine for the ride.
I would highly recommend this tour to learn about the colourful history of the area and lovely outing in a beautiful carriage.
Thank you team 😊
Website booking isn't very mobile friendly, otherwise it was a 5 star experience. Thank you
It was our first experience at horse driven carriage
Our host was very friendly and knowledgeable
He gave us all the information about the place we were riding through
His wife and dog were also very friendly
We took the ride till battery point and it costs us only 200 dollars
Looking forward to visit the place with our family in future
Location is perfect just outside the Salamanca market
I will suggest you to book online in advance as slots might get filled
