Step away from the crowds and experience a truly private rainforest setting on this relaxed, small-group nature tour. Designed for travellers who appreciate quiet immersion in nature, this experience offers exclusive access to a hidden part of the hinterland rarely visited by the public.
After pick-up, we travel north of Brisbane into the hills of Bellthorpe, where the landscape rises to nearly 600 metres above sea level. Here, a remarkable mix of habitats unfolds, ranging from dense subtropical rainforest to open forest, creating an environment rich in biodiversity.
Our morning is spent exploring the private property of Bellthorpe Stays, where access is normally restricted. Walking at a relaxed pace along the rainforest tracks, we are surrounded by towering trees, buttress roots, vines, and ancient ferns. This diverse habitat supports an impressive variety of birdlife, making it a rewarding experience for both casual observers and keen birdwatchers.
With patience and a bit of luck, we may encounter species such as the Regent Bowerbird, Wompoo Fruit Dove, Catbird, Noisy Pitta, Riflebird, and King Parrot, along with many smaller birds moving through the canopy and undergrowth. The forest is alive with sound, and your guide will help you tune into the calls and movements around you.
Wildlife encounters are always a matter of chance, but the property offers excellent opportunities. Wallabies, goannas, and even echidnas may be seen, while the creeks and forest floor are home to frogs, reptiles, and unique species such as the Richmond Birdwing butterfly.
Midway through the walk, we pause at a secluded waterfall, a peaceful spot to rest and take in the natural surroundings. Along the return track, we pass areas of special ecological interest, including the habitat of one of the world’s rarest trapdoor spiders.
Before returning to the Resource Centre, we visit the lily ponds, home to a variety of frog species.
Back at the Resource Centre, we enjoy a relaxed break with a cup of tea or coffee before continuing the day.
In the afternoon, we visit Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, where a short rainforest walk offers a different perspective of this ancient ecosystem. From the reserve, enjoy sweeping views across the Glass House Mountains before settling in for lunch at the café.
This tour is ideal for those seeking a more exclusive and immersive rainforest experience, combining rich wildlife, varied landscapes, and a peaceful atmosphere away from the more frequented locations.
Note: If you are staying at Bellthorpe Stays, a guided tour without transport can be arranged.

Anita has superb knowledge of the area and access to locations that you can't normally get to. The tour was tailored around our restricted walking abilities and the recent weather, which made sure we could both had a lot to look at. Which included a lot of trees, birds, fungi, mist obscured mountains, pademelons, an informative visitor's centre and two dogs that were very disappointed that we weren't staying around longer.
I did the "Bellthorpe Rainforest Tour" and it was great to see all the wildlife which is quite different from anything in Europe. If I would have had more time during my stay in Brisbane, I would without hesitation booked another tour with her!
Thank you very much for the day out in the woods :-)
Coffee and cake, then a delicious lunch completed a thoroughly enjoyable and informative day.
Maiala Rainforest. She is knowledgeable and gives plenty of opportunities to appreciate such a beautiful place! Would book her again without a second thought.
I recently had the pleasure of experiencing a day trip with Brisbane Nature Tours to Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island), and it was truly exceptional. Our guide Anita crafted an experience that perfectly balanced natural beauty, cultural education, and local cuisine.
The day began with a scenic ferry ride to the island, followed by our first stop at the studio of respected local Indigenous artist Delvene Cockatoo Collins. This thoughtful introduction to the island provided valuable context about the natural materials sourced from various locations and set the tone for a day of authentic experiences.
The highlights continued with the stunning Gorge Walk, where we were treated to breathtaking coastal views. One of the most magical moments was encountering kangaroos and koalas in their natural habitat - not in a zoo, but living freely in their home environment.
Brown Lake was another standout experience. Swimming in its tea tree-infused waters was both refreshing and therapeutic. Our lunch featured the local delicacy of Moreton Bay bugs, which was absolutely delicious and perfectly showcased the region's seafood.
What truly sets this tour apart is Anita's genuine passion for the region. Her deep knowledge and obvious connections with local communities ensured we were welcomed warmly wherever we went. She provided rich context about the destination that transformed what could have been just a pretty sightseeing trip into a meaningful cultural experience.
If you're looking for a day trip from Brisbane that offers natural beauty, wildlife encounters, and cultural insights, I cannot recommend Brisbane Nature Tours and Anita highly enough. This tour is the perfect way to experience the wonders of Minjerribah with a guide who truly cares about creating authentic and respectful experiences.
