What is Australian food?

This small-group walking experience explores Melbourne through its food — from native ingredients and migrant influences to nostalgic favourites, modern classics and the dishes that have found a place on Australian tables.

Beginning on the banks of the Birrarung, we’ll wander through Melbourne’s laneways, dining rooms, market precincts and local institutions, stopping for 10 carefully chosen bites along the way. Each tasting adds another piece to the story, exploring the flavours, cultures and traditions that continue to shape how Australians eat today.

Designed and led by Nic — a Melbourne local with a passion for food, storytelling and thoughtfully crafted experiences.

Thanks for booking Decoding Australian Food: A Curated 10-Stop Walk

I’m really looking forward to exploring Melbourne’s food story with you.

We’ll meet at Yarra Botanica on Southbank Promenade, on the banks of the Birrarung. I’ll be there with a friendly smile, ready to begin our wandering long lunch together.

Yarra Botanica is easily reached on foot from Flinders Street Station and is well connected by train and tram. If you’re using public transport during your time in Melbourne, the PTV app is very helpful.

This is a relaxed small-group wander through Melbourne’s streets, laneways, dining rooms and market precincts, enjoying 10 curated food stops along the way. Through flavour, conversation and storytelling, we’ll explore the deliciously complicated question of what Australian food really is.

Please arrive hungry and wear comfortable walking shoes. Melbourne weather has a habit of changing its mind, so a small umbrella or rain jacket is always a good idea too. You can also check the local forecast here before we meet.
