Empress Canyon: The Ultimate Beginner’s Canyoning Experience

Empress Canyon, located in the Blue Mountains, offers an unforgettable canyoning experience that’s perfect for beginners and exhilarating for seasoned adventurers alike. Journey through lush, ancient rainforest as you leap from rock ledges ranging from 2 to 5 meters high (optional), swim in refreshing mountain waters, and marvel at the canyon’s stunning sculpted rock formations. The adventure culminates in a thrilling 30-metre abseil down a breathtaking waterfall!

Your adventure begins by gearing up in a warm wetsuit, harness, backpack, and helmet. Our skilled guides will provide a safety briefing and abseil training, ensuring everyone feels confident and prepared to explore the canyon’s depths.

As you trek through Empress Canyon, you’ll be captivated by its beauty, scrambling over boulders, plunging into crystal-clear pools, and spotting vibrant orange crayfish below. This tour is one of the best ways to discover the hidden wonders of the Blue Mountains—a journey into the wild that everyone should experience!


Difficulty: Suitable for first time canyoners.

Requirements: A moderate level of fitness, full mobility, good general health. Must be comfortable in water.

Expectations: Adventurous activities are tough – you must expect the possibility of, at times, being uncomfortable, wet, cold, tired and scared.

Don’t book this tour without first discussing what the tour involves with all members of your group and checking they meet the fitness requirements.

Length: Approximately 3-4 hours

Availability: September to April.

Included: All canyoning equipment, qualified canyoning guide, safety instruction including abseiling techniques.

Meeting location: Bus parking area outside – The Conservation Hut Cafe, Fletcher St, Wentworth falls.


This exciting adventure consists of:

  • 30m Waterfall abseil
  • Short swims
  • Rock jumps up to 5m
IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

You will receive a digital Medical form/Waiver form to be completed individually by each participant prior to arrival. 

Participants under 18 years of age must have their form(s) completed prior to the activity by a parent or legal guardian.

MEETING LOCATION

Unless specified otherwise, the default meeting location for this activity is the bus parking area outside of – The Conservation Hut Cafe, Wentworth Falls.

Late arrival will result in your tour commencing without you. Aim to arrive early, particularly if travelling from afar.

WHAT TO BRING FOR CANYONING:

• Wear active/sports/hiking clothes. (Dress appropriately for the weather – please check the forecast beforehand).
• Cold weather: warm layers such as a fleece or warm jacket, thermal undershirt and long pants
Enclosed running shoes, joggers or trainers – a pair you are happy to get wet. Boots are acceptable but not ideal.
Do not wear sandals, open footwear or soft-soled reef shoes – these are not permitted
• Swimming attire (wear under clothes)
• 1 litre of water (more in hot weather)
• Sunscreen
• Hair ties for long hair
• Waterproof Camera (Optional – must float/ be attached securely to your body). GoPro action cameras are available to rent; contact us if you would like to arrange a rental. 
• Personal medication if required

Canyoning backpacks will be provided to carry the above along with the provided wetsuits, harnesses and helmets. The clothes you hike to the start in can be placed inside dry bags to stay dry while you descend the canyon.


Leave the following behind in your car or the guide vehicle for after the tour:
• A towel.
• Change of clothes.
• Change of footwear.
These are for your comfort after the tour.

Please leave valuables at home as we cannot guarantee their safety, especially easily lost or fragile items such as jewellery and non-waterproof electronics. 

You are responsible for any personal items you choose to bring into the canyon. Items taken into the canyon are exposed to water and impact and may be lost or damaged.
