What to Expect
Whale watching from Hervey Bay is second to none. The region was recently designated the world’s first Whale Heritage Site, and with good reason. Only in Hervey Bay do the migrating humpback whales take a break during the annual season. Here they stop and relax in large numbers, making for the most amazing whale watching encounters on earth. You can assist the crew by scanning the seas for the first flash or a splash as pods of whales play, signaling the start of your awe-inspiring experience. As the whales approach the tour only gets better as Hervey Bay is well known as the best place to experience up-close whale encounters. Whale ‘mugging’ is common as they move in close to watch you, watching them. An experience you won’t forget, a 40-tonne humpback whale just metres away from you is breathtaking!
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the morning whale watch better than the afternoon tour?
The whales are all individuals and behave differently, generally their behaviour changes randomly throughout the day. There is no pattern, they can be more active in the morning or afternoon.
Is the weather rougher in the afternoon?
There is a weather phenomenon called “the afternoon sea breeze” however this rarely is of any significance to affect whale watching. The weather is determined by the main weather patterns and can be similar all day or increasing or decreasing during day. Our skipper monitors the weather in advance and will advise of any concerns that may affect your cruise or comfort.
What’s included in the whale watching cruise?
Our whale watch tour includes access to our comfortable waiting area in The Boat Club, a 4 hour whale watch cruise with commentary from experienced locals and guaranteed sightings, morning or afternoon tea, and a discount at the Hervey Bay Boat Club on your day of travel. Available for purchase aboard: snacks in the canteen, beverages at the bar, and souvenirs.
Is the tour suitable for small children?
Yes, our vessel (AMAROO) is a very large and stable 20 metre (66 foot) catamaran, safe and comfortable for persons of all ages. There is no requirement for children to wear life jackets, however, we have a range of jackets onboard for use if you feel more comfortable. We do require that parents provide suitable supervision to their children during the cruise. Activity booklets are provided free of charge for all children.
Do you guarantee that we’ll see whales?
Yes, whale sightings are guaranteed between the 23rd July and 7th October. However, it is very rare for the whale watching fleet not to see whales between late-July and mid-October. In the unlikely event that the captain is unable to locate a whale during a whale watching cruise between 23rd July and 7th October, a complimentary return ticket will be offered.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Hervey Bay is renowned for consistently great mild weather conditions. Combined with the shelter for K’gari (Fraser Island) this ensures that most whale watch cruises take place in reasonably gentle sea conditions. We monitor the weather closely, in the unlikely event that your cruise has to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions the captain will provide as much notice as possible. You can reschedule your whale watch or receive a return ticket. Generally, we only cancel for strong winds… rain does not bother us or the whales. Safety is always our first priority. RAIN? We have undercover areas on both levels, with excellent views!

The whole experience was very enjoyable with the Captain giving us all very informative information about the whales breeding & migration activities.
A experience not to be missed & the 4 hour boat cruise was well worth the money with free tea & coffee available & you can also purchase snacks & alcohol on board.

Though not a whale watching trip, we still had whale swim around the boat.
Beautiful views and sunset.
Would fully recommend the Boat club for trips out and able to get a meal and drink afterwards
Staff matched the food.
Ate at the boat club with 10% discount food was reasonable. The courtesy bus ride home however was atrocious. The driver drove at speed and ran a red light.
A wonderful experience ,friendly crew and definitely worth the cost.
The sunset cruise has one drink included but you can then purchase drinks at at very low cost. $8.50 for a Sav Blanc!! So good.
The boat had a toilet on board and complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits that you could help yourself to. There was also more drinks and snacks that you could purchase on the boat. There's plenty of indoor seating on the main deck and seating upstairs under the shade.
The captain and deck hands on the boat were very friendly and knowledgeable giving us lots of information about the whales and their behaviour.
After the tour we had a delicious lunch at the Boat Club overlooking the marina which topped the morning tour off perfectly. Will definitely be back again in the future!
We saw lots of dolphins and birds of all sorts.
Well worth doing.
Phil, the captain, is a very lovely guy, in general the team was great! I learned so much about whales and their behavior.
4 hours passen like nothing and they are so respectful with the animals.
I can highly recommend that tour!
The water was choppy due to high winds but the boat was comfortable and the highly trained captain Phil knew which way to point the boat to avoid discomfort. I enjoyed my first trip so much I went another 2 times.
Prices were fair and whales were super close.
Highly recommended 👌
Thanks again to Captain Phil, crew Claudia, Cal and Aiden for making my holiday so memorable.
Lots of wildlife and great sunset, moon rise. Highly recommend
Tbh there wasn’t much to see apart from large stretches of ocean water. We did go close in to one sandy islet.
It was nice to receive a glass of champagne and some nibbles.
Perhaps more lively music and a chance to ashore would have enhanced the whole experience.
Up close with the whales 🐋 couldn't have asked for a better trip.
Highly recommend 👌
Inexpensive and pleasant. Served bubbly on arrival and nibbles I’m on cruise. Would do again.
The staff were lovely and the music they played was very upbeat felt like a bit of a party
I live in the Bay and would go again
Was a little breezy so the Captain decided to motor across the bay to Moon Point on K’gari - gave us a wonderful evening out of the prevailing wind alongside beautiful beaches and clear water
The crew were fantastic and it was our skipper’s very first solo, in-charge of the vessel. She did a wonderful job, made the cruise very enjoyable and returned us safely to the marina
This short scenic cruise is perfect for locals & visitors alike, and helps give another perspective of beautiful Hervey Bay
The vessel is large, stable, clean, modern and very spacious
Purchase your tickets on-line or at the service desk as you enter the Boat Club. On-line tickets are available for collection at the front desk, when you arrive for your cruise. Hold onto your tickets, as everyone receives a food & beverage discount in the bistro or restaurant, after the cruise ????
Here’s a little tip - sit out on the bow for the best views ☀️
The commentary was informative and just the right amount talking about Hervey Bay, Kgara and the whales.
Morning tea was generous and varied with mini muffins, biscuits, fruit cake or cheese dip and crakers pk. Tea, coffee, water or cordial was offered but difficult to drink due to the swell.
We saw numerous pods of whales including mother and calf, young males and pods trying to breed. Some were willing to linger near the boat , just as inquisitive as we were. But others shied away and the boat was quietly maneuvered into place so we intersected with the pods progress on their terms and we got to see tail slaps, head lunges and bubble curtains by the males trying to impress the females.
We saw two rare whales one mottled black and white and one with white fins, both stood out in the water.
We were fortunate that the wind had died down the morning we went but even then I would recommend wearing sunscreen and long sleeves as hats are difficult to wear and sun and windburn affected everyone.
The whale watching experience is both informative and humbling. We were told there was over 200 whales in the bay that day, the same total number of whales in 1980. Since banning whaling their numbers have steadily increased and now these gentle giants are hunted with cameras instead.
You will need a power bank or extra battery for your camera to be able to take all the photo opportunities you get on this adventure and we will definitely book another tour next time we are in the area.
A bonus was getting so close to the K'gari/ Fraser Island shoreline. What an incredible place.
Well worth doing.
Back to the Boat Club for lunch, for a burger and beer
The boat consist of 2 levels, upper deck with outside seating with 360 degrees views. The lower level has fronts/back of boat seating and inside with a Bar/Kiosk area with amenities.
While on the cruise you have an opportunity to seat in the BOOM-NET that lowers down to the water from the side of the boat as you slowly cruise along.
Great views on bird life, dolphins and dingos on the Fraser Island coastline. Didn’t see any whales as it was the wrong time of year but the cruise was informative about the history of Hervey Bay, Fraser Island and its surrounding areas.
Only downside was light refreshments provided was only tea and coffee.
Big thanks to captain Phil and the crew for an insightful and pleasant cruise.
You can also use the upper deck to spot dolphins ,some people chilled with a wine up there just taking it all in. The views are spectacular . Some people had their Titanic moment posing for a pic at the front of the boat.
This is the only boat with a side net that let us watch where we were going plus you can even buy a beer on board and take it into the net with you.
The captain is so knowledgeable and he and the crew are involved in protecting and recording the dolphins and whales in the area to help the conservationists .
I never knew these islands had such an amazing history. Yes Fraser or K'Gari Island is truly a magical place. This was big fun!
Well done Boat Club and thanks heaps to Capt Phil & your friendly crew.
