Your guide will meet you on Lonsdale St on the west side of the city grid and will take you through the areas where the law was practiced from ‘wattle and daub’ mud shacks to the grand Supreme Court.
Stop by what was our first Exhibition Building and former mint, admire the oldest house in the city centre, old laneways with a very 19th Century feel and see where ‘shot’ was made up until 1961.
Admire the dome of the State Library that used to be the biggest in the world and view historical art showing places names long forgotten such as Emerald Hill, Batman’s Hill and Sandridge.
Other stops include the former clinic which treated the social diseases in abundance during the Little Lons period of legal prostitution and the building depicted as the Supreme Court in Fergus Hume’s famous novel, ‘The Mystery of a Hansom Cab’.

Thank you
Was very helpful with questions.
Recommend highly. He also recommended restaurants and took photographs.
She showed us city's well-preserved gold-rush era buildings coexisting harmoniously with contemporary designs, creating an eclectic urban landscape. I would highly recommend this tour to make your Melbourne experience marvelous!
The culinary tastings along the walk were exceptional, showcasing a delicious variety of local flavors. We also appreciated learning about the rich history behind Melbourne’s vibrant food scene.
We would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a unique and memorable experience in the city.
Right from the outset, John showed us buildings and laneways in Melbourne that we’d walked past countless times before but never really noticed or understood the significance behind them. His insights into the history of these places were fascinating.
One of the highlights of the tour was discovering Brunetti's (Italian bakery), a hidden gem I didn’t even know existed. The place is amazing and definitely worth a visit!
I can’t recommend this tour enough. If you’re a local or a tourist, you’ll definitely learn something new and uncover some of Melbourne’s best-kept secrets. I’ll certainly be coming back for another tour in the future.
Well done, Meltours and especially John!
Bernard and Olivier , French guys 👍
This is the 2nd tour I've done with MELTours (the other being the Miss Fisher tour with Kathy), and I have found them to exceed my expectations, with very passionate and experienced tour guides, in a small group setting. Highly recommend.
Kathy D indeed brought to life the scenes of many inner Melbourne locations of the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries series set in the 1920’s. Kathy combined the characters, their real lives too, connections with events and personalities of the time with highlights of the daring entrepreneurs of fashion, art, and architecture and the wizardry behind filmmaking! This is my second tour with Mel Tours, so truly recommend them.
A small group so very easy to chat and make decisions on which bar to have a drink at.
Sam was knowledgeable and shared insights and stories.
Bars were great, some we knew and others we would never have found on our own. We were able to stop at some and take a peek at others.
Well worth out time and a good evening.
