The discussion on the bus arose from other guest asking about honey production and bee habitat pressures. Native forest logging impacts around 70% of leatherwood sources, which bees rely on, so we always aim to provide accurate, evidence-based context when questions come up. Your views are, of course, your own and 100% respect that. However, the overwhelming majority of our guests and most locals do not share the government’s current position on native forest logging. Liam worked in forestry for over 20 years as a contractor focused on compliance, environmental protection, and upholding legislation, so the information we provide is based on firsthand experience. A large proportion of our guests are locals, and we have always been committed to sharing balanced, factual perspectives, something we’ve maintained consistently for over 14 years. According to Forestry Tasmania’s November 2025 report, native‑forest logging operations recorded a A$22.9 million loss. In addition, the organisation carries a A$24.5 million unfunded superannuation liability, highlighting ongoing financial burdens. The recently reported headline profit by STT of A$0.5 million profit relies heavily on carbon‑credit income (from plantations), forest revaluations, and government grants, rather than on the profitability of native‑forest logging itself. In short, native‑forest logging is economically unprofitable and environmentally and brand damaging for tourism and farmers. It surely is frightening for our guests to not only hear these facts but to be woken to log trucks and single-riders passing with 100 plus year old trees laden for woodchips. We are all for well-managed plantation industry. We would have been happy to address any concerns and/or hear you lived experience in van but at the end of the tour.
