Lofty Descents tour.
Thank you for booking onto our Lofty Descents tour, we are sure you will have an excellent day. We hope this sheet gives you all the information you need for the day. Pick-up
*The standard pick up location is at 9am from outside The Adelaide Central Coach terminal at 91 Franklin St, Adelaide. wait outside near the taxis and Electric Car Charger Station. We will then commence hotel pick ups if requested. We may not come to the coach terminal if no one has requested this
*For anyone wanting to park for free, there is a second pick-up at 9:10am at the South Australian Croquet Association Car Park in the Southern Parklands, just off Hutt Road. Free 5 Hour parking. This is where our ride will finish.
PLEASE let us know which pick-up you require, and make sure we have heights for all riders.
Alternative hotel pick-ups can be arranged, but MUST be pre-arranged with us.
The day.
You will be transported in our Van to the summit of Mount Lofty, which at 710m is the highest point in the Adelaide hills and offers excellent views of Adelaide, the Hills and plains.
We will provide you with a good quality mountain bike with front suspension, disc brakes, 27 gears, and a helmet. After a briefing about bike safety, our route and the trails, we will start off by riding along dirt tracks and service roads to the first stop of the day, Cleland Wildlife Park.
Entry to the park is included, and we will then spend about an hour exploring the park. We will see Kangaroo’s, wallabies and other native wildlife, and will be there in time for the Koala meet.
After this we will stop for a quick morning tea, before we set off on the big ride of the day. The riding though Cleland Conservation Park is stunning, and we will travel though native bush along 4WD trails.
Finally we will drop out into suburban Adelaide, and will ride along quiet streets and through parkland back to Adelaide city.
We will return to Adelaide to drop-off by between 1pm and 2pm. Please note we may leave the van at the summit and ride all the way back to the city and NOT see that van at the end of the trip, so you will need to carry everything you bring the whole way. You may also need to walk back to your hotel or accommodation from a central finish point in the city.
The Riding.
The riding will be a mix of forest tracks, fire tracks, and quiet public roads. We will ride about 15km, but don’t worry, it is mainly on downhill or on flat trails and roads. The off-road section of the ride is on 4WD trails and service roads, and whilst the trails can be uneven and rocky in places, walking a short distance is no problem.
What to wear/bring:
Suitable comfortable clothing for riding a bike off-road. Shorts are best, as are clothing that is ‘quick dry’ and light. Enclosed shoes are essential.
A drink bottle – we will carry extra water but you will need to bring your own bottle or hydration pack etc.
A lightweight jacket if forecast looks wet
An extra layer in case it gets cold, it is often much cooler at the summit of Mount Lofty
Sunglasses and sunblock
A small rucksack to carry above items
We provide a good quality mountain bike with front suspension- please confirm your height so we can make sure we have suitable bikes available. If you wish you are welcome to bring your own bike. However, it is YOUR responsibility to make sure your bike is well maintained and up to the ride. Please let us know if you plan to bring your own bike so we have adequate room on the trailer.
Phytophthora Cinnamomi
Phytophthora cinnamomi is (PC) is a water mould which is carried in soil and water that cause root-rot disease symptoms and eventual death to a wide variety of native plant species, exotic fruits, vines, nuts and ornamental plants. Much of the Adelaide hills parks is already infected with this mould, but the Department of Environment and Heritage are keen to stop it’s spread. As such it is a requirement that we clean bikes and shoes on entry and exit of Cleland Conservation park. To make this simple we ask you turn up with relatively clean shoes (NOT caked in mud) and the same applies for bikes.
OK, see you soon,
Ian,

Rented 4 bikes for 10 days in October riding about 70-80 km per day. The bikes were so good. Battery charged quickly and were powerful for big hills with packs on. Joel at Escape Goat did an amazing job helping us get set up for the trip as we’d flown in from interstate. He was creative and helpful when we had issues with mounting screws. Ian was helpful throughout the process. Great guys, great bikes, great trip.

We did the self-guided e-bike tour to Tapanappa winery and had the BEST day. Definitely more appropriate for intermediate riders rather than beginners, but a great way to explore the Adelaide Hills and enjoy stunning views from the summit of Mt Lofty. Thanks to Ian and team for looking after us.

We went for a winery tour ride with Ian. The weather at the start of the day was a bit rough but Ian was happy to delay our start until it cleared up so we could ride in the dry. The trail we took was great (very picturesque) and pretty easy riding on e-bikes (the bikes were great quality), Ian was super knowledgeable of the area and took us to some great wine and food experiences. We will be back in the Summer too to do it all again as this ride would be even more incredible with the sun out. Thanks for a great day.

The lunch spot and the wineries were all good and very well planned. We opted for Goodieson Brewery as the last stop and boy was their beer good! The Brown Ale was my favorite.
Highly recommend if in Adelaide for a few days.

I really enjoyed the Mclaren Vale winery tour! The morning ride through the national park was great - we saw kangaroos and koalas, the scenery was outstanding and the riding was challenging and fun. Cycling between the different wineries and breweries in the afternoon was great too. Overall the day really exceeded my expectations! Thanks Ian :)

Had a great time hiring an e bike from Escapegoat. Iain couldn't have been more helpful. Set up a self guided route on Garmin for us. 40k covered with wonderful trails and views from Mount Lofty.
Couldn't fault the quality of the kit and the friendly service.

Had a great tour with Lee. Fantastic guide around Craigburn Farm and Sturt Gorge. The e bikes were brilliant and we managed to tick off a good amount of trails. Will definitely be back and will look to use Escape Goat again!

I did the Mount Lofty downhill mountain biking tour over the Easter Weekend and had a fantastic time. The track truly was all downhill. We went just after it had rained so some parts of the track were a little slippery, however still managable. I paid for the upgrade for a dual suspension bike and I would definitely recommend doing that as it made the trip down much more comfortable. Having the break to explore the wildlife park was also a treat. Well worth the money and would definitely do it again and also do their other tours too

I had an absolute blast biking around the Onkaparinga River National Park. The trail can sometimes be a bit difficult and tricky but Ian (our guide) tried his best to guide us through. He even tried to accommodate everyone's pace & made sure nobody was left behind. He was also very knowledgeable about the area and willing to answer any question that we threw at him.
We visited 2 wineries & 1 brewery on this trip and I felt like I had enough alcohol for the whole month!!! So many varieties to choose from. Reasonably priced (with shipping options too!). For lunch, we had a cute cheese board at one of the wineries. It comprises local produce so it's delicious & sustainable!
Couldn't recommend this tour enough if you want a bit different experience than a regular wine tour. Bike & wine should be the next big thing!

The break at the Cleland Wildlife Park was so much fun. We got to feed the emus and the wallabies.
Escapegoat provided excellent mountain bikes. Ian was easy to communicate with and went out of his to ensure we would be able to participate.

We did the Mount Lofty ride and Cleland wildlife park. A very enjoyable adventure going downhill along mtb trails. Also Spotted lots of koalas
We arrived via cruise ship at outer harbour. A train from the terminal took us straight to Adelaide station where the guys from Escapegoat picked us up. The timing worked well for us.
