Getting Here by Car
On most evenings, street parking is available within a few minutes walk of the tour start and finishing points.
Occasionally, this wonderful town hosts events & festivals that can make street parking a challenge. On such nights we recommend using the King St Garage multi-storey carpark as the simplest alternative, located a 5-10 minute walk from the tour starting point. Find the carpark here.
Fitness Level
- The tour is approximately 1-2 km in length, taken at a very leisurely gentle walking pace with plenty of stops along the way.
- It usually takes 90-100 minutes with hills kept to as minimal as possible, with some stairs to navigate. Aside from which the tour runs mostly on flat terrain.
Running Late?
- If for reasons beyond control you are running late, please contact us and provide an estimated time of arrival, and the tour host will be notified.
- If you are running more than 10 minutes late, as the tour will have already started, we will attempt to coordinate with you and the tour host for an alternative meeting point.
A1. The answer was b- Coal River Settlement.
Newcastle was established as the Coal River Settlement, primarily because of the method of punishments for convicts was in the form of having to work tirelessly to mine mostly coal.
A2. All of the above.
Prisoners were subject to overcrowding, poor sleeping conditions, and potentially frightful roommates i.e.- 13 year old pickpockets sharing cells with hardened murderers was not a happy combination.
See you soon :-)

I joined the Newcastle Dark Stories True Crime Tour solo and was thoroughly impressed. The guide was knowledgeable, witty, and highly interactive—cleverly weaving humour into chilling tales while making sure everyone felt included. Her storytelling brought Newcastle’s dark history to life in a way that was both entertaining and informative. A great experience for solo travellers and true crime fans alike!

Terrible experience. Hyped up to something it certainly wasn't. Sound was too loud in the headphones, container was so hot and stuffy. Very disappointed and did not last the whole time either, glad it didn't cost too much. Wouldn't recommend.

The walk itself was pretty easy, the locations were not that far apart, so it would be about 2-5 minutes of walking at a time. 2 people in our group did it in thongs so don’t let the walking stop you.

I first booked for the 19th of August experience but a few hours before the beginning of the tour, I received a cancellation via email!
I decided to rebook (for the 26th August tour), because I was really interested... but unfortunately 3of us waited for a guide that never showed up ! (They didn't even know where the hot was...) it is not professional and really disappointing ????

My partner and I went on a true crime tour around the Darling Harbour on the 21st of July. Having never been on one before to say that it was better than I expected was an understatement! The person leading the tour (who I have forgotten the name of) absolutely made the experience as great as it was. Without their enthusiasm, sense of humour and amazing ability to engage the crowd the whole way through I definitely don’t think it would have been half as worth it to us as it was.
Thank you kindy to the group who waited patiently for us to find our way which meant we were running a bit over time aswell but I’m so so glad that we didn’t miss it. Safe to say I’ll never be able to look at Sydney the same way again, some places I pass through frequently and other places I didn’t even know existed but it’s definitely a tour that’s one to remember and the host created such a great atmosphere. Highly recommended to anyone who isn’t sure, trust me it’s worth every penny!
