This course is the starting point for anyone wanting to safely get out on the water.

A general boat driving licence is mandatory for anyone operating a recreational vessel at speeds of 10 knots or more (approximately 18.5 km/h) on New South Wales waterways. This licence confirms that you possess the necessary skills and knowledge to safely navigate and control a vessel at higher speeds, helping to protect everyone who shares the water.

If you're ready to apply for a general boat licence or upgrade to a personal watercraft (PWC) licence in NSW, you’ll need to pass a knowledge test tailored to the specific licence type. The test is an essential part of ensuring all operators are well-prepared to handle their vessels responsibly.

In New South Wales, individuals aged 12 and above are eligible to apply for a boat licence. However, younger licence holders are subject to certain conditions, such as adult supervision or speed restrictions, to help them develop safe boating practices as they gain experience on the water.

To prepare for your test, take advantage of online practice quizzes designed for both general boat and PWC licences. These quizzes use questions directly sourced from the official test database, offering a realistic preview of what to expect on exam day.

Before sitting for your test, ensure you’ve reviewed the boating and/or PWC handbooks thoroughly. These guides provide essential information on safety protocols, operational rules, and navigation techniques to help you become a responsible boater.

Whether you're looking forward to a peaceful outing on the water or an adrenaline-filled adventure, obtaining your general boat driving licence is not just a requirement but a vital step in ensuring your safety and compliance with NSW boating laws.

Below are general directions for getting to **Marine Rescue Cronulla** (located at the end of **Tonkin Street**, near Cronulla Wharf) by car and by public transport. Always check traffic conditions or public transport schedules in advance, especially during peak times.

1. By Car

  1. Starting from central Sydney (as an example):

    • Take the Princes Highway (A1) southbound.
    • In the suburb of Sutherland, turn left onto President Avenue (Route A1 continues as Princes Hwy, but you’ll veer left onto President Ave).
    • Continue on President Avenue until you reach The Kingsway; turn right onto The Kingsway.
    • Follow The Kingsway all the way into Cronulla.
    • Shortly after passing Cronulla High School on your right, watch for Waratah Street (it will be on your right).
    • Turn right on Waratah Street and follow signs for Cronulla Sailing Club near the waterfront on Gunnamatta Bay.
  2. Parking

    • There is usually street parking around Waratah Street and nearby residential streets.
    • Always check signage to ensure you park legally and be mindful that weekends can be busier.

2. By Public Transport

  1. Train (T4 Line)

    • From Sydney CBD or other stations on the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line, catch a train to Cronulla Station (end of the line).
    • Trains typically run every 10–15 minutes during peak times and every 15–30 minutes off-peak, but always check the timetable.
  2. From Cronulla Station to Cronulla Sailing Club

    • Walking: It’s about a 15–20 minute walk (1–1.5 km) depending on your route. Simply head west along Cronulla Street or The Kingsway, then turn onto Waratah Street to reach the waterfront.
    • Bus: Certain local bus routes (e.g., 979) may stop nearby, but these can have limited schedules. Check Transport for NSW or local bus timetables to see if a bus aligns with your arrival time.
    • Taxi / Rideshare: Taxis and rideshares (e.g., Uber) are generally available near Cronulla Station and can drop you off right at the Club.

Tips

  • Plan ahead: Use the Transport for NSW Trip Planner or a similar tool to see up-to-date bus/train times and any service changes.
  • Weekend travel: Traffic can be heavier, and parking can be more difficult in Cronulla on weekends, especially on sunny days and during special events.
  • Walking directions: Always check a map app to confirm the best walking route once you arrive at Cronulla Station.

With a little planning, getting to Cronulla Sailing Club is quite straightforward. Enjoy your trip!
