I brought a group, many with physical injuries and limitations, and everyone felt safe and welcome. One of the highlights of their weeklong trip to Melbourne.

Positive first surf lesson Had a great time on our Surf lesson with Oscar. Ended up being a private lesson with just my friend and I as it was a 10am session on a public holiday (November 2025.) The 2hrs felt generous as a learner and a positive atmosphere overall. They have hot showers we used afterwards and change rooms/lockers. Would highly recommend!

Super friendly team! I had an amazing private lesson with Kev yesterday morning! He was encouraging, really knowledgeable about the area, and clearly passionate about what he does. I left the session having learned so much — and even kicked a few bad habits! Gally helped me choose the right board, which made a huge difference. Before booking, I also spoke with Colt, who took the time to talk me through my options, the surf forecast, and the area (I’m a newbie). Such a welcoming and helpful team — I’ll definitely be back!

Great experience Kev was great he was full of knowledge and kept giving me little bits of advice to help me improve each time. Everyone was helpful.

Great knowledgeable staff. They did a good combination of instructions on the beach and in the water. Lesson was a generous 2 hours, probably enough for a beginner. The instructor was very attentive to the class and got people up on the boards.
We arrived late due to getting lost, but they were super kind, helping us to catch up with the class down at the beach.
Beautiful location as well.
Basic but clean toilets at the surf shop. There are plenty of places to eat nearby.

If you're in Torquay, visit the Surfing Academy Right from the moment you walk through the door they are so welcoming. They know exactly what they're doing and make it as easy and quick as possible to get down to the beach and enjoy the surfing. We went on a public holiday and the beach was packed but somehow Alessandro managed to keep an eye on us all and give individual tuition once we were in the water. The whole family had a great time as absolute beginners and we would definitely go back to the Surfing Academy next time.

Child friendly I did the multi private lesson with my 7 year old daughter and she had so much fun she asked if we could do it again tomorrow.

Rented two beginner surf boards for 4 hours for $80 total. EFTPOS surcharge of $1.20. Driver licence need for rental.

Boards were 8 foot long, wide and buoyant so made catching waves really easy. Both boards just fit into our SUV for the drive down to the beach. Had a handle on the middle of the boards that made it easier to carry. However that handle does dig in a little into the ribs/stomach when you're paddling and into the feet when you've popped up.

Shop was closed by 4pm on a Sunday so drop off after was to leave boards at a rack behind the shop.

My daughter took two lessons over the weekend, on the Sunday she was the only one in the class and had a private lesson with Jamie!!! She loved it and was standing up and surfing by the end of the lesson! Thanks so much!

Wonderfully Stupendous Surf Lesson in Famous Torquay By far the best surf lesson I’ve had all over the world. I’m very new to surfing. I live in the mtns so I don’t get the opportunity to surf often. I did a 3 day surf camp in Costa Rica last year. But the tweaks that Coach Kev gave me in our two hour lesson were so foundationly important that it really completed my surfing core. I can’t wait to get out in the waves again and practice over and over. Highly Recommend

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!
the owner of this bussiness offer us to use the showers once finishing our board rentals and by mu surprise- as I was showering completely NUDE- he obviouwly heard the shower and came up to me & saw me nude. Once having seen me nude, I said “Im sorry??” He step back & then CAME twice & saw me naked AGAIN.
This is obviously a super overwhelming experience. I felt harrased & super humillated.
I hope nobody have this experience. Not recommend at ALL. Im super dissapointed.
If I could give 0 stars, I will.

The Best Fun So much fun. Kev got my level but challenged me to get the most out of our two hours together. I felt safe and supported by him and really built a strong foundation as someone just starting out. Would absolutely recommend.

This is long overdue but here goes. From the moment we stepped into the shop we knew this was where we wanted our kids to learn to surf. To learn from who else but the locals of the surf area. We started with a lesson with the beautiful and kind Jamie and then we signed up for four more! The surf instructors really did a good job with the technical aspects of the lessons- and they even go above and beyond. We ended the series of 5 lessons with Arty- such an amazing young man. Thank you to everyone at Torquay surf academy. We will be back !

What a morning ☀️ ????????‍♀️ Our kids had the best time down at Cosy Corner with Jamie learning to surf. She was a knowledgeable instructor with a great personality so the kids felt comfortable as soon as they met her. All 3 kids - 12yo, 10yo and 6yo were up on the boards not long after they hit the water. We’ll be back for sure ????????‍♂️ ????????

Amazing experience Had the most incredible time catching some beautiful waves at Torquay beach, myslelf and my partner got stuck in traffic on way down and we were 30mins late but they were very accommodating and made our experience feel at ease, friendly and helpful staff with a smile. The lessons were great, would Recommend doing an early morning lesson as it was very busy at12:30 session. cannot wait to go back down soon and so it all over again

I have hired a surfboard from this company on several occasions over serval years and often with other people who require one also. Every single time I have been there, every single staff has provided top-notch service along with a clean high-quality board at very reasonable prices. The store is always clean and welcoming and when the time comes, you can also buy a surfboard there as well.
Surfing is one of the most beautiful things we can do here in Australia and getting your equipment from this company just makes the whole experience all the better.

Invest in yourself to improve your skills I’m an experienced surfer with 30 years in the water. Kevin was able to point out really helpful tips to help fine tune my skills. American here (from SoCal), and called up the day before on short notice while on holiday and they were able to accommodate having someone tutor/shadow me to surf the famous "Bells."

Best two hours in Torquay! Booked two hour lesson and I wasn't sure if I will be able to get anything out of it as I am not a good swimmer. But Brad, our instructor was very kind and helpful. He made sure we were safe and learning in best possible way. H e explained the basics very clearly which gave us good exposure to surf easily. By the end one of us was able to stand on the surfing board while I was able to get on my knee. We are happy to have selected Torquay Surf academy and will recommend to anyone who wish to learn the most in a day. You should book online a day prior as lessons begin at 10am.

Had 2 private lessons with Kevin. The man is a seriously clever teacher. The sheer amount of detail in his advice could fill a book. Took my surfing further than any other teacher I've had prior. Will absolutely come back for more when I can!

Great service. Brad replied to my enquiry promptly and when I made the trip down a few days later got me into a wetsuit and a board promptly. Equipment was great, wetsuit brand new! Also had very good local knowledge of the area.

Exhilarating fun even in winter! Absolutely loved my surf lesson today! The guys were so nice at the surf shop and lent me a wetsuit. The boards were super forgiving and the instruction was so good. I’m so happy with how it went. Wasn’t cold at all even tho it was mid winter. Was so exhilarating to stand-up a good few times during the lesson. How exciting! Really recommend these guys.

We had a surf group lesson sunday morning and it was amazing. I really recommend it. Brad is friendly and the girl coach is a good teacher and keep smiling dispite of cold water, she's strong!Unfortunately we didn't have time to thank her. We will have good memories

Best part of the holiday My whole family and I had a private surf lesson. We all really loved it. Everyone managed to stand up and some of us did really well. The instruction and equipment was truly first class. The wet suits were much appreciated and I didn’t feel cold at all. The instructor was friendly, patient and very helpful. I didn’t want the 2 hours to end but at the same time we were all exhausted. I would recommend this to anyone who can swim well and enjoys the beach. We are now hooked on surfing and may well do some again very soon if we can fit it in to our schedule. Thank you for such a memorable and fantastic experience.

Had the most awesome morning even without the sunshine. Could not have asked for a more easy going, kind and helpful teacher who gave me so much confidence . I am looking forward to coming back later in the week and weeks ahead!

We took our two kids up to Torquay for a couple of days as a Birthday treat for my son Evren. Surfing lessons with Brad was part of the fun and both kids had an absolute blast. Everything from wetsuit fit out to the actual lesson was on point. Brad was clear in his teaching, very knowledgeable about surfing
and patient with the kids. We will back there again at some stage and thank you to Brad and the team for an amazing family experience.

I had a wonderful experience here for a board hire. Service was wonderful, friendly gentleman who might be the owner/manager was helpful. I came from California, didn't have a board, and just wanted to find something more than just a foam board to use. Super thankful they had a series of epoxies in different sizes, some that were surprisingly fun and maneuverable on head high days, see picture with Drifter epoxy models, those were amazing.

Can't reiterate it enough, good people, nice boards, friendly, even gave me recs on fish n chips and breweries. Will be back!

Great fun and a good beginning. I'm an old chook, probably too old to learn to surf, but Kev was thorough and patient. He filled the 2 hours with a balance of instruction, explanation and on-water practice. I feel confident that, with replenished energy, I will be able to follow through with his advice and teaching and make it!

Legends Was a great experience at surfing academy. Fitted into wetsuit and headed down to the beach, given board and a run through of etiquette in the water and safety. Was able to catch heaps of waves, although didn’t always get to standing. The ocean is a humbling place haha. Arty is an absolute legend, he took time to give everyone some attention and instructed my Euro speaking partner with ease. His positive and friendly vibes are infectious and I hope to return again! Like going surfing with a friend We had a great time! Part of a very small group and we were in the water only minutes after getting down to the beach. Instead of long drawn out things on land like I've seen other schools do.

It's definitely a more personal approach, you ask questions and you'll get tips to help you progress. Just like a friend taking you out.
