Seeing sea lions truly depends on nature but
there are at least 20–30 sea lions living on the island that you can see when arrive at the spot.
The crew guided us to an excellent spot, but ultimately, whether the sea lions come close or not is entirely their choice. When the sea lions became curious and approached us, the crew guided us calmly so the interaction felt natural and respectful. They also helped that kept the sea lions interested us, so if they chose to stay, they would remain close rather than swim away.
The most important thing is that the sea lions come to you by their own choice. So before going to bed the night before, I recommend saying a little prayer and hoping they’ll visit you as I did!!🧚♀️🧚♀️
Making eye contact with a sea lion and sharing that moment was unforgettable. It was an absolutely amazing experience and something I will treasure forever.
I paid 185 AUD each, which includes approximately 45 minutes of snorkelling, a 15-minute boat ride to the area where the sea lions are usually found, and tea with a Tim Tam. One of the female guides was very knowledgeable about these adorable animals and made an effort to keep the trip informative and pleasant. Unfortunately, we only saw one adult sea lion in the water for about one minute. We were fortunate enough to see two pups on the island, on land, calling for their mother.
To put this into perspective, we have done three marine safaris in different locations such as Shark Bay, Coral Bay, and Exmouth. In those tours, we saw an abundance of marine life to the point that it became overwhelming in the best possible way. We swam with manta rays, tiger sharks, countless species of fish, turtles, dolphins, and more. Each of those tours lasted around eight hours, included lunch, and covered three different snorkelling locations. We paid no more than 250 AUD per person for each of those experiences, which represents excellent value for money. The cost-benefit ratio was absolutely worth it.
For these reasons, I do not recommend this tour. If operators are going to charge 185 AUD per person while knowing that sea lions are not abundant in this area, or only gather during certain seasons, they should be more transparent with customers. Alternatively, they could invest in technology, as many operators do for manta rays and other marine animals, to better identify where wildlife is located. For example, some tour operators use aircraft to spot manta rays from the air.
Additionally, I would strongly suggest improving safety measures. Guides should carry a life buoy at all times and should not rely solely on participants’ claims that they are strong swimmers. Why wait for a tragedy to occur? On every other tour I have done, there was one guide following the animals and another staying behind with the group, equipped with a first aid kit and ready to assist in case of an emergency, or simply to allow swimmers to rest.
Pd. The other operator called oceanic experience goes to a different spot where they are more abundant. I regretted not booking with them

Bonnie especially was a treasure trove of knowledge who patiently shared with us nuggets of information about the Australian sealions. The crew kept us safe, went out of their way to ensure we all of us (even those who were struggling to swim) had a close up experience with the sealions. Definitely one of our most memorable experiences ever.
Thank you guys! Highly recommended.
There are two companies offering these encounters — I highly recommend booking with Turquoise, as they are much more considerate of the animals.
Have fun! 🤩
Here is my detailed review:
I’ve done many tours during my trip through Australia, but this one had by far the worst value for money. I paid $185 for the Turquoise Safari sea lion tour and saw a single sea lion for maybe five seconds in the water. We only saw the others from far away. The crew was genuinely friendly and helpful, which is why I’m giving two stars instead of one.
Once in the water, everything felt completely chaotic. We were just swimming aimlessly from left to right and back again, multiple times, without any clear reason or explanation. It felt disorganized and pointless.
The snorkeling was honestly terrible. There was nothing to see—just endless sea grass, no reef, and barely any fish. You even brush against the sea grass while swimming, which was really unpleasant.
Also keep in mind: the water is very cold. That might be fine if the experience was worth it, but in this case, it just added to the discomfort.
I honestly wish I had booked with Lobster Shack instead. Their tour is much cheaper—even if it’s with more people, at least I would’ve lost less money in the end.
I’m writing this honest review because the company emailed me and asked for feedback.
We hopped in and stayed for 45 mins snorkelling with ~3 sea lions, which was fantastic. We had a few curious juveniles plus one big mature male.
It was very cold in the water, I’m really glad I brought my long wetsuit (they do provide shorties). Lovely hot drink once back onboard which was much needed, and hot shower available once back on land. All in all a fab experience.
We had the chance to swim with sea lions and observe them lying on the beach and playing in the rocks from the sea! Unforgettable!
Getting a hot drink right after the swim was great, and the water (end of September) is ok to swim in even in a short wetsuit. Remember to take warm clothes with you to change into!
There was another boat next to us but the sea lions chose to us mostly swim with us, so I would definately recommend choosing Turquoise Safaris 😉
The tour guides, sorry I can't remember their names (we were there on the 30th 7:30) were so knowledgeable, especially the darker hairs women. I only wish I had warmed up quicker to take in what she was saying!
My top tip is to not fight to be at the front of the group. We hung back because I wasn't as confident in the snorkel as everyone else and it ended up working out for the best, several times the sea lions swam away from the group and right up to us, it was incredible.
The only downsides were; the time of year, after 30 minutes it was bloody freezing (took us hours to warm up afterwards but totally worth it)! And I had assumed we would have had a couple of photos from the tour company. We didn't want to spend the time taking pictures in the water, we wanted to enjoy it, and assumed there would be a picture of two front the team. This is not implied anywhere just my assumption and would have been a nice addition. But over all, great experience. We will be back!
The staff Rosie, Cory and Hunter were professional and helpful. Ensuring that we had the best nature experience possible!
I booked the 7am tour and it was a stunner of a morning.
A quick 10 minute boat ride to the island to be greeted by 8 sea lions sunning themselves on the beach. There were 18 on the beach when we left.
Unfortunately the sea lions didn’t want to have a swim with us. They’re wild animals at the end of the day and we were in their environment, they certainly were not encouraged over to us either.
None the less, it was still awesome to float in the warm water and watch them come in from the ocean. One baby seal getting the zoomies chasing a seagull was certainly a highlight.
I hired the go- pro and would recommend anyone to do it. Great To get footage.
However as the the sea lions weren’t in the water with us, the team kindly refunded my hire of the go - pro and offered everyone a half price voucher for next time. Thankfully I live in WA, so I will definitely use this in the future.
The team were warm, welcoming and had a lot of knowledge about them.
Thanks for a great morning team and I look forward to being back and hopefully swimming with the sea lions
They even had the audacity to ask us to pay more for a second trip ! Are you kidding . Dont do it cause if you dont see them you have thrown your money away , and its expensive !!!!
They also stayed over their allowed time.
Very disappointed that this tour group couldn't share the ocean.
Because of this, we didn’t get any kind of experience or interaction with them. We got somewhat close to their island and were able to spot them on shore from a distance, but otherwise nothing. There’s understandably always a chance the animals won’t approach you in the wild, but at the end of the day we paid 300$ for an experience we didn’t receive.
We got an apology from the kind staff and a voucher for 50% off ‘for next time’, but I would’ve much rather taken at least a partial refund.
Can’t recommend this tour highly enough, was well worth the money.
