Operated By:
Come and explore Seppelt Wines heritage-listed underground cellars, known as “The Drives” with one of their tour guides.
The Seppelt guides will provide a fascinating glimpse into Australia’s pioneering wine history and take you underground to the labyrinth of hand-dug cellars.
Cellar excavation first begun in 1868 by out-of-work gold miners and took over 60 years to dig the 3 kilometres of cellars that can hold over 3 million bottles of wine. The underground cellars are the largest underground cellar in the Southern Hemisphere. It took over 60 years to dig the cellars to what you see today. It truly is a unique experience and a ‘must-do’ when visiting the Grampians Region.
Once you emerge from the underground cellars, your guide will then take you on a journey through our sparkling wines, including the Seppelt Sparkling Shiraz, which was first made in the Seppelt Great Western Cellars in the early 1890s.
Guided tours cost $28 for an Adult, $22.50 for a concession, $10 for school-aged children, under 5 no charge. Tours depart from the Seppelt Wines Cellar Door 7 days a week at 11 am, 1 pm and the last tour leaving at 3 pm.
A visit to the Grampians is not complete without a trip to the region’s original winemaking pioneers at Seppelt Great Western.
Open seven days a week, experience the beauty of country Victoria at our historic cellar door for a tasting or to purchase wine, coffee, a light lunch or cheese platter, and step back in time underground with a tour of our heritage-listed cellars, “The Drives” – first excavated in 1865 and the longest in the southern hemisphere.
With a tradition of winemaking excellence dating back to 1851, sample some of the best of Victorian wine at our cellar door – from the cool Grampians country, the wild Henty hinterland and the famous Cambrian soils of Heathcote; Seppelt’s esteemed portfolio showcases the unique personalities of some of Victoria’s finest vineyards.
Seppelt Wines in Great Western are home to some of the country’s most iconic wines including our flagship St Peters Grampians Shiraz, Drumborg Vineyard Riesling, and our multiregional Chalambar Shiraz; furthermore, we are arguably Australia’s most renowned producer of Sparkling Shiraz – a uniquely Australian wine style for which the Seppelt Show Sparkling Shiraz sets an enviable benchmark.

Mark made the experience especially engaging—his knowledge and storytelling brought everything to life. There was so much to learn, and it was great to see all the options for hosting special occasions right in the cellars.
Highly recommend a visit!
We arrived a little early for the tour so had a drink and our grazing platter which was fantastic value for money.
Tom was our Tour Guide and presented an interesting and engaging tour. The winery is very interesting but the underground tunnels are next level. Lots of tunnels to walk through and so fascinating.
This is a must see attraction.
Afterwards we had generous tastings and finished off our platter. Lovely day.
We did the 12.00 AM tour (.our Guide Ricky was knowledgeable and entertaining )and followed it up with a grazing platter lunch. The whole experience was excellent
Our tour could not have been delivered better.
My husband and I left Seppelt with a greater appreciation of wine and respect for the laborious work of miners digging out over 3 kms of tunnels to form the underground cellars.
Highly recommended this experience. If you haven’t done it yet, book to be immersed in the rich and extensive history of Seppelt.
We have had this one on our to do list for sometime and weren’t disappointed.
Thank you Taryn for a memorable visit. You obviously love what you do .. a great tour followed up with beautiful service afterwards.
Thank you Ricky once again. Christine & Chubby, Portland, Victoria.
We have done this same tour 2 years ago with Tamika and would say they both are equally brilliant in their own knowledge style and humour they bring to this experience.
The 4 of us will definitely be recommending this tour not to be missed to all of our family and friends especially with these two wonderful people who have been our guides. 🙏🙏
The place itself is stunning, and learning about its rich history made it even more memorable. Thank you, Ricky, for making our anniversary so unique and unforgettable. Highly recommended to anyone visiting the area!
Felt like we were hanging out with a mate who knows everything about wine and history. Such a great way to spend our special day. Highly recommend it if you’re ever around!
If you’re visiting Seppelt, definitely try to go on a tour with Ricky – he made it extra special!
A visit to Seppelt Winery is like stepping back in time while indulging in the best of modern winemaking. Located in the heart of the Grampians, this historic winery is famous for its underground cellars, which date back to the 1860s. Touring these cellars feels like uncovering a hidden treasure, and the atmosphere is one of quiet grandeur, perfect for anyone with a love of history, architecture, and, of course, wine.
The cellar tour is a standout experience. As you wander through the cool, atmospheric tunnels, you’ll learn about the winery’s rich heritage and the art of winemaking that has been perfected over generations. The underground cellars, known as “The Drives,” are truly unique and offer a glimpse into the past—one of the few places in the world where you can experience this fascinating winemaking tradition.
Of course, no trip to Seppelt would be complete without a wine tasting. Their selection is superb, with everything from bold reds to crisp whites. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable, offering insightful tasting notes and recommendations based on your personal preferences. Whether you’re a seasoned wine connoisseur or just looking to enjoy a glass in a beautiful setting, you’ll find something to love here.
For those interested in taking home a bottle or two (or more!), the winery shop has a wonderful selection of wines, along with local produce and goodies. It’s also a lovely spot to relax and take in the views of the surrounding vineyard.
Whether you’re a history buff, a wine lover, or simply looking for a picturesque stop on your road trip, Seppelt Winery is a must-see. Its blend of heritage, craftsmanship, and hospitality makes it a true standout in the Grampians wine region.
Ricky’s knowledge about wines was unmatched – he guided us through the history of Seppelt and explained everything in a way that was both engaging and easy to understand. He offered us tastings of a fantastic variety of wines, including some beautifully aged ones, which was such a special treat.
What really stood out was Ricky’s kindness and genuine passion for what he does. He made sure we enjoyed every moment and tailored the experience to suit everyone’s preferences.
If you’re looking for an exceptional wine tour with amazing wines and a guide who truly cares, Seppelt Wines with Ricky is the place to go. We can’t recommend it highly enough!
Tour included wine tasting.
Negative- no lunch or dining options. Really disappointing. No picnic baskets to buy. Missed opportunity.
Outdoor Toilets were disgusting- not cleaned and covered in bugs and webs. Sink area very dusty.
It’s hard to comprehend that so many bottles of wine were once stored here. The drives are incredible.
Thankyou to Colin and other staff members for making it such a great experience!
He is a respectful asset to the cellar door Seppelt Wines.
Thank you.
On another note : I realised when down in the underground cellars that the walls are covered with black mould and it is thick on the ceiling. This is a high health and safety issue and I would highly recommend the owners supply masks for all people going down into the cellars. It can cause serious health problems. I covered my face with my jumper to protect my lungs.
Ricky took extremely good care of us and generously expanded our tasting adventure.
We left with happiness and a full box of wine bottles:)
