Why......????
I don't understand all the great reveiws for this restaurant.
I'm new to the area, and, after reading such great reviews, and seeing some very nice photos, l was really looking forward to an excellent experience.
But l was sadly disappointed.
The venue, the view, the staff, were all fine, and the food quality was ok.
But, with all the huge overheads that are involved in running such a place, why skimp on the size of the servings? The cost of vegetables would be the least expensive part of the meal, so why only put a teaspoonful of lentils and a spoonful of cauliflower puree with the main on a plate? Surely it would be just a fraction of the overall costs to be a little more generous?
We came away from our lunch today feeling unsatisfied, and arrived home for a cheese platter and our own dessert to finish off our meal.
In future, l was thinking to bring our family and guests here for a great dining experience, but l will now be looking elsewhere, sorry to say.

I had my birthday lunch at Josef Chromy. From beginning to the end our experience was exemplary. We had the gorgeous Timmy (Tim Tam) looking after us. She made us feel so comfortable and was incredibly attentive and effervescent. The food and wine was divine. Highly recommended on every level. Ps: the Martini special was to die for.

Food was delicious but be prepared for some wait, as service is likely intended to slow you down from any busy life and take time to enjoy the experience and surroundings.

No a-la-carte options available - you have to get the set menu. My partner and I got 2x 2-set courses ($85) but split combinations to be able to sample an entree and a dessert across. Here's what we ordered:

Barbecued Scottsdale pork jowl
- extremely well balanced, equal parts meat and fat, which was rendered well.

Dry aged pinnacle sirloin
- decent, with really good leek. Though a proper steak at a steakhouse would be better.

Braised cressy lamb shoulder
- tender, flavourful, but slightly salty. Lots of lentils and fennel was tasty

Cheese platter
- simple, but best of the dishes in my opinion. Please get this over any of the dessert options (even though I've never tried). We opted for the Brie, and accompanying items were absolutely fabulous. And the manuka honey to tie your cheese stacker together - O.M.G

Josef chromy pinot noir
- medium bodied, light-medium taste depth

Josef chromy Riesling
- nice and dry, as described. But I wonder if I may have preferred the sweeter pepik Riesling.

Would I come back here for the food alone? Maybe, mostly due to price concerns. Would I bring a date here to impress? Absolutely.

Dined on a weekday morning in August without reservation and queue.

We stopped in for lunch and arrived early, before the restaurant opened so we opted to grab a couple glasses of sparkling wine to enjoy by the fireplace. The cellar door is quite charming and the sparkling wines were delicious as well. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Once the restaurant opened and we were seated, we had a look through the menu. The setup is quite similar to Stillwater. They have some a la carte "snacks", but you choose either 2 courses (entree + main or main + dessert) or 3 courses. Some courses include a supplement, but this is noted clearly by the server.

We started with a half dozen oysters and I think they were the best we had on our trip to Tasmania. So clean and fresh, and the shallot mignonette was a perfect accompaniment.

We both opted for entree + main, but it turned out to be way too much food, especially in light of the half dozen oysters we had to start, so just be aware that the portions are quite large. I started with the octopus and my wife had the pork jowl. Both were really tasty, but again, quite large, so after finishing them, we were already getting pretty full. For the mains, my wife had the market fish and I had the lamb rump. The fish was flaky and tender with a crisp skin, which offered a nice textural contrast. The lamb rump was so tender and juicy with a nice fat cap that been slightly crisped. It was super rich and decadent, but paired quite nicely with their Pinot Noir.

The service, just like we experienced at the cellar door, was exceptional throughout the meal.

The property itself is also very picturesque so if you arrive early, walk around (respecting the signage, of course) and take photos. Overall, whether you're coming for a tasting at the cellar door or eating at the restaurant, you'll have a wonderful time.

The food and services from Josef Chromy Wines' restaurant were above and beyond expectations... So a big thank you to all those who provided high expectations and professionalism 🙏

Absolutely stellar.

Their bread and butter is to die for.
Their oysters are the freshest in Launceston.
Their dishes are all reasonably sized and we never leave feeling like we could eat more. I recommend started with their in-house NV.

Josef Chromy has also managed to outdo itself offering a vegan mushroom dish that manged to be my favourite dish of the day - despite not being a vegan.

I've been here now 4 times in the 3 years I've lived in Tasmania and my next visit will be soon!

Great lunch While staying in the area for a few days we decided to book for lunch what a great decision. Not only was the food superb, but all the staff were very professional and friendly and provided a great but unhurried service. Would highly recommend.

We had a winetasting and lunch package. The wines were delightful...especially the sparkling.
Our beautifully presented two course lunch was of the highest quality and flavour.

This is a review of the Joseph Chrome Wines restaurant. We did not do the wine tasting. We got the set menu for lunch. The service was very, very friendly. The food was delicious. We found the atmosphere very relaxing and elegant environment.

31 December often not the best day for lunch out - and it is my birthday. Josef Chromy superlative for my special occasion - this year marking 3/4 century. ( over the ten years we’ve been Tasmanians, now a longstanding habit)
A wonderful experience from entry to a very satisfied departure. Happy birthdays from the tasting area staff, and a carefully guided wine tasting. Thanks to Bea and staff.
So the the airy, naturally lit restaurant, more friendly greetings, and a delicious menu - limited and sufficient courses, creative in conception and superb in execution. We are a couple with very different dietary preferences- each easily navigable on the menu. Each of our dishes beautifully presented and flavourful.
The winner (and not by much) - several drops of a basil and lime jelly garnishing the mango profiteroles! Every other dish had delicious distinctives.
And every dish a visual feast.
And table service perfect - friendly, attentive and non intrusive.
Chromy’s is a 300k round trip from Penguin for us - and always richly returns on our investment.
A wonderful centrepiece to my birthday.

We didn't eat as we had lunch elsewhere however the cheese platters we saw looked delicious. We had a non alcohol and a raspberry gin lemonade yummy. Although there most tables inside were full, there were still seating options outside in the shade on the verandah. Service slow and not very attentive. Had to show waiter drinks wanted 3 times from menu as couldn't find it on POS till the waited 25min for drinks.
Will give this place another go and have a meal as atmosphere and surrounds were impeccable.

Excellent experience We enjoyed a relaxing wine tasting in the garden setting which was perfect to allow the toddler to be entertained exploring the garden. The wines are excellent. Afterwards we walked the attractive grounds, around the dam and the gazebo. All round a very pleasant experience.

Great lunch spot with top notch food, awesome surroundings, and friendly service. Timmy gave us the best service we received in Tassie so far. Very accomodating for dietary requirements. Highly recommended

Lovely location to enjoy an informal afternoon out. On an afternoon out we took a late visit to enjoy a drink or two and something light to eat. We sat outdoors in the lovely garden settings and enjoyed a couple of glasses of their fine wine and a tasty platter of local produce. The staff were friendly and the service was spot on.

Lunch with friends over Easter, have eaten at Josef Chromy many times over the years and rarely disappoints. Apart form the wonderful location, backdrop of vines the food and service always great!

A wonderful gem! We had the opportunity to taste a few wines today and they certainly did not disappoint! Julia was a fabulous host and explained our wines perfectly. Julia was there when required and discreetly slipped way and left us to our tasting. Highly recommended!

The restaurant is stunning and views of this place are amazing. We did the 2 course option with entree and main and both courses were generous size and delicious. Wines were good but definitely not the best we tried while in Tassie

As good as it gets. Superb. Wonderful experience. Bea a lovely Polish lady with a passion for wine was our guide and the tour of the vineyard was interesting. The wines offered for the tasting were superb but the highlight was the lunch. The food was divine. It's as good as it gets. Splendid .

Very pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
We did the "Let's do Lunch" package which included 2 courses a their hatted restaurant as well as a tasting beforehand.
The staff were friendly and professional.

The entry is vanilla cheese co stracciatella, oyster mushrooms pickled with Szechuan pepper & verjuice, asparagus , miso egg plant , almond, green onion oil. Even this dishes is vegetarian, but the taste is rather rich, it is so cheesy and creamy, with yummy miso egg plant and asparagus, the mushroom are soft too.

The main is wood lamb rump, salsa verda, buttered cos lettuce.. etc. the lamb is cooked medium rare. The meat is tender and soft, and the sauce is rather tasty. And portion is generous too.

The dessert is berries with vanilla ice cream. It is a rather light dessert, and the berries are fresh.

The flat white is very rich in taste, the coffee got strong aroma, and the texture is smooth too.

P.s: The scenery of this restaurant is stunning!

n amazing grazing lunch with some sparkling rose at @josefchromywines today. It’s been 12 months since our last visit and it didn’t disappoint. Grazing platter with a side of potatoes was just what we needed and the sparking rose was perfect. Love this winery. ‘Til next year - merry Xmas!

We could not stay for lunch but the wine tasting was such a great experience- knowledgeable staff and so helpful- we bought some wines and they were promptly delivered- next time definitely having lunch!

Josef Chromy Wines is on my top 5 best places to eat! No words can describe how delicious the food was. We had a 2005 Vintage Chardonnay, which complimented our food perfectly. 20min from the airport, I know where I'm going when I come back to Launceston.

Great venue but mention allergies at least twice The asparagus rissoto was truly exquisite, silky texture with tender spears however the fish of the day, blue eye trevalla, was utterly destroyed by the use of chilli powder in the dusting with no mention in the menu. We had told the excellent and attentive wait staff that we has a garlic and chilli allergy so this is pretty much inexcusable. Lovely venue, great matching wines but one serious let down.

Sleek, contemporary restaurant with beautifully-done mod Oz cuisine in a lovely countryside location. The brasserie, serving more casual fare, spreads out onto the surrounding verandah, right up against the windowside restaurant tables, which makes for a slightly odd contrast in dining experiences, but it’s still a lovely day out.

Visited on the way back to the airport. Beautiful place and super good service. Wine selection is not elaborate but few geed reds. Had a cheese platter with the wine. Slightly on the expensive side but worth a visit

Sensational Our experience was wonderful. Our beautiful Japanese hostess was very knowledgeable & the food was magnificent. The price for the wine tasting was too expensive for what you get ($350 inc. two course lunch) Next time we would have 3 courses & two nice bottles of wine for the same price. In saying that it was a memorable experience & if we lived in Launceston we would dine there every week.A must for all visitors & locals.

Well managed gardens, but the outdoor seatings need some refurbishing and bird drops all over the furniture needs cleaning.
Inside, a rather small area but posh and well presented.
Friendly and attentive staffs deserve commendation.

We loved our early lunch at Josef Chromy Wines, such a beautiful view and great people, passionate about their trade. A special shout out to Justin who made our day with his stories and expertise!

Amazing food and nice wine to complement. Each dish bursts with flavour, allowing you to enjoy the great atmosphere and stunning views across the estate. We finished lunch outside with a cheese board overlooking the lake.

Had a fabulous experience yesterday. A lovely wine tasting session from a lovely young lady called Julia who was very sweet and friendly.
Then we moved into the dining area and had wonderful service from Ryan. And compliments to the kitchen as our meals were absolutely lovely.

We had a wine tasting, and were very impressed by the enthusiasm and knowledge of the lady serving us. We then had a tasty cheese platter, and it was generously sized. To top it off, the views were fantastic.

Enjoyed the wine tasting and the lunch. Special mention to Sandy who guided us through the wine tasting. She was patient despite the many questions that we had.

Picture perfect in every way. Josef Chromy Wines has it all, top quality and tasty food, great wine, great service and picturesque views of the gardens and vines.
There is nothing I can fault or would change.
Every plate of food not only looked fantastic but most importantly, they all tasted so good.
It was certainly value for money.

Brilliant Lunchtime Experience Had a 2 course lunch and wines as well as a tasting experience as part of a tour package. The winery is stunning and we started with a tasting flight very capably conducted by Julie who was very friendly and knowledgeable. Then to the restaurant for a delicious 2 course meal accompanied by a couple of matching wines. Can’t speak more highly of the food, service and ambience of the facility. Highly recommended.

Worth a visit for location and wine One of the best wine tastings for the wine selection and location. It was very busy when we where there so kept having to go in for service however we had a wonderful time there and walked around the lake

Beautiful grounds, modern tasting room. Staff helpful. Wines good. Pre-bookings are strongly recommended with several different wine flights of four wines each available at $15-00 each.

We were seated at benches on stools though I believe we could have sat outside if we had requested to do so.

We did the Classics tasting flight (NV Tasmanian Cuvee, Brut Finesse 2018 sparkling, 2022 Pinot Gris and 2020 Pinot Noir) and the Reds tasting flight (2021 Pepik Pinot Noir, 2021 Rose (normally Pinot Noir but his was substituted), 2021 Cabernet Merlot and NV Ruby Pinot). There was a third tasting flight "Aromatics" available that included two different Reislings, a Pinot Gris and a Rose.

Preferred the sparkling and Pinot Noirs, though obviously personal taste.

Staff were helpful and friendly although the associated tasting notes with each flight were very useful.

Unfortunately though you could not offset the cost of the tasting against purchases of wine, which is increasingly becoming the case.

We stayed for lunch and would recommend dining here.

I had the venison and the short rib, my husband had the blue eyed, all courses were flavoursome and well presented.

Great venue, probably the worse cellar door ever experienced. Arrived for a booked and paid for wine tasting. Had to wait in bus zone until chained off drive way opened after 10. Booking was for 10.15. I had researched the wines not the reviews of the cellar door and took my colleague, a Spanish wine documentary series maker to taste two "flights". Greeted by a surprised young hostess who couldn't find our booking. Had to tell her what was booked etc. We sat ourselves down as we're not shown a table. We sat by a windows with a fantastic view. We were quickly told to move as that table was booked. With no one else having a tasting, we were sat at a table facing a wall. 10 wines arrived, hostess read the notes that were printed in front of us. Asked for a spittoon, never arrived. Had to break into her glass polishing to remind her, then given a paper cup.
Wine, the reason we came for was quite good, the service however was appalling. Never was spoken to again. As we were leaving, again, nothing. Didn't feel like buying anything after this impersonal service. Oh, and after 40 minutes no one else arrived, and those seats with the views, yes, remained unused.

Just excellent ! The wine tasting is very well done. They produce some very good wines and the location for both the wine tasting and the lunch is very attractive.
The lunch is served in their multi capable restaurant which is a delight to visit and as a function capable venue beautifully set out and stylish.
The lunch is just superb. They have a very good kitchen, staffed with very accomplished cooks and of course a very talented Head Chef.
The food choices were so interesting and so flavourful.
The service was excellent. We really enjoyed our visit here and the experience was just so enjoyable. Highly recommend a visit here.

Delicious wines, Fabulous food Great winery tour with excellent wine tasting and topped off with a fabulous lunch. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the winery and the wines we tasted. The lunch was absolutely delicious. If you don't have time for the tour at least go to the restaurant. We could not recommend this more highly.

First visit there in Feb 22, lunch was okay but didn’t quite buy into how great it was.
Latest lunch there, we got it. Very very good lunch. Good portion sizes, interesting dishes to choose from as a non vegetarian.

Though if you are vegetarian you’re pretty much limited to one option on the set menu for each course. Kids menu is pretty normal, you’d find it anywhere in oz

Nice option for wine by the carafe as well.

Winery With A View Left Launceston for our next destination and stopped here on the way through. One of the more beautifully presented wineries I've visited in Australia. Didn't have a booking but as we were first there the friendly and helpful staff gladly fitted us in. The tasting experience was quite good with some different and lovely wines. We bought several bottles here but they don't discount or waive the tasting fee . Didn't have time for lunch but the restaurant looked nice. Wasn't overly interested with their menu thought. However if you like your wine and food then definitely check it out.

A beautiful winery and worth a visit! What a lovely wine tasting experience! We hadn’t planned to go here on this day but our plans changed so we tried to book online but couldn’t as you need to book online 24 hours in advance. We phoned them and they were happy for us to go. Staff were friendly and so knowledgeable about their wines. We already knew we loved their whites but was great to try them all. Next time we will book for lunch as the aromas coming from the kitchen were amazing!

We stopped here around 4pm, and despite the bar and wine tastings being closed, Sandy accommodated us with a short, complimentary wine tasting instead.

She was very knowledgeable and passionate about the wines, and we throughly enjoyed all the ones we tasted.

Just visited the winery today. I've never had such a comfortable wine tasting session! It's totally well worth $15 and the effort to make the booking. Sandy(the lady who served us) is very knowledgeable and very willing to share and introduce wine that she thinks we will like based on our drinking preference. She made us feel at home. The surroundings around the winery are also beautiful and offer lots of opportunities for nice photos. It's a must go place if you are in Launceston! Will definitely come again for my next trip :)
