Your tour begins as music from the 1940’s pipes through the sound system – and you are on your way!
Departing from the Darwin Visitor (Tourist) Information Centre you’ll commence your tour with a short trip around the Darwin city centre where you’ll learn about the buildings, statues and points of interest associated with Darwin’s establishment and early development. As you pass Government and Parliament Houses your tour will head down the esplanade alongside Darwin’s beautiful harbour and the narrative turns to Darwin’s involvement in WW2. You’ll pass sites associated with anti-aircraft batteries, Catalina flying boats, Army and Navy barracks and the sombre loss of many Australian and American servicemen and civilians. From there your first stop will be at a house where bullet holes of an attacking Japanese zero fighter are still in evidence. As we head north of the city you’ll be treated to stunning views of Mindil beach, Fannie Bay and the harbour entrance before stopping at the 1934 QANTAS hangar to learn about Darwin’s involvement in the early air races and the devastation wrought by Japanese airforces over Darwin during the war. Your tour will then head to East Point military precinct. As we pass through the tropical monsoon rainforest in the area, you might spot some of the abundant wildlife – wallabies, eagles, kites, snakes, magpie geese and dingoes that abound here. At East Point you have the opportunity to disembark at the Military Museum/Defence of Darwin Experience (entry fee additional), and be picked up by the subsequent tour an hour and a half later. At the museum you can involve yourself in the interactive displays – experience what it was like to be in Darwin during that first bombing raid!
As we head back via the north east of the city you’ll be treated to prime ministerial and presidential speeches, pass by oil storage tanks and tunnels, machine gun strafing marks, Stokes Hill and Fort Hill Wharves and Darwin Harbour – stopping to learn about the devastation of shipping in the harbour during the first Japanese raid. Returning to the Tourist Information Centre the narrative turns to post war Darwin the subsequent devastation by Cyclone Tracy in 1974 and Darwin in the modern era.
With small groups and a comfortable vehicle you can sit back, relax and enjoy the views and expert commentary by your professional tour guide.Tour vehicle seats a maximum of 18 people per tour. Attachment points for booster seats are fitted to some seats.

Brilliant tour in a truck that is around 80 years old and still purring along. Our guide and driver, David, drove well, was extremely knowledgable and adept at presenting that knowledge whilst driving around Darwin. Pretty much no pauses in information flow and all of it good quality.

If you do 1 tour in Darwin do this. A man, passionate about his work, presents an excellent story of Darwin. The WW2 army truck is very comfortable & cool. I can’t recommend this tour enough. Include the museum & you have a great trip!

Dave took our whole family on a tour (8 to 80yr olds) and everyone enjoyed it. So informative about Darwin’s general history and the bombing, we did the hop on hop off at the military museum which was amazing inside and the extensive outside exhibits too.

I highly HIGHLY recommend this tour to anyone who wants to learn about multiple aspects of Darwin's history.
The tour is well run, involving very good audio and commentary. The tour guide was a true professional.
This tour covers all areas of Darwin and really interesting spots that you wouldn't know about!
There's laughs, shock, intriguing places and more to see on this tour.
I did all the "must do" things in Darwin, but this takes the cake!
Shout out to those who make this tour so enjoyable!
Mega shout out to David!!! Awesome work.

Commentary brought the damage to life with evidence from the war and the subsequent Cyclone Tracey.
The American troop carrier you go on has actually starred in several movies.

Great experience on the tour, from the novelty of being on the old truck, to the information that was passed on right through the trip. Would recommend doing this tour as one of the first things when you are in Darwin, as David shares lots of information about other places you can add to your list to visit during your stay.

The historical tour with David was simply brillant! The ride in the WW2-Truck was an adventure in itself, but with the truck we visited so many interesting war sites. David illuminated different aspects of the wartime which was great! I particularly liked the variety of information we recieved. David is a very competent guide and I am extremely impressed by his knowledge of Darwin’s historical past. Pure excitement!!:)

Hi Trish glad you enjoyed "Old Betty"
The idea is to keep the vehicle as much as possible as it was when it was built over 80 years ago - so you get the real feel of what the diggers of yesteryear went through

Meet Betty - a 1940s Studebaker, built in the USA for the military and now one of the most unique ways to explore Darwin! We joined David on the Darwin History and Wartime Experience Tour on our recent visit and it was superb. It's a 90-minute run around town in this amazing heritage vehicle, complete with informative live commentary. Anyone wanting to delve into Darwin’s backstory will love this tour! Note: Betty has the wet season off.

Sorry guys - big thumbs down to you as well. You got on the wrong vehicle - another company - despite being redirected by both ourselves and the other company, which meant we waited past our departure time by a significant period, our staff made a big effort to contact the driver of the bus you were on - that you hadnt paid for and werent supposed or entitled to to be on and that wasnt going to the military museum ( that you wanted to go to) in order to try and sort things out, you were then picked up at a "non pick up point", further putting the vehicle behind schedule and putting other passengers both onboard and at the museum behind schedule - without any apologies or consideration for others, on top of that you placed a scooter directly in front of the object we were trying to describe when you got onboard - all in all a very poor showing by yourselves

The guide needs to slow down a bit and let you comprehend what he is saying, but very enjoyable riding in the truck and you will see stuff you wouldn't see normally, recommended

I had a great time on this history tour of Darwin. Our driver was very thorough and knew all the places to take us. Unfortunately there were a couple of places where I wasn't able to hear him too well due to the wind blowing through, this was mainly near the boats. It may have just been because today was quite windy. However it didn't take away from the very interesting afternoon. A great time
