Discover the Raw Heart of the Whitsundays: Outback Heritage Trail
Get ready for an unforgettable day as we take you beyond the palm-fringed beaches and turquoise waters of the Whitsundays, deep into the untamed west—where history, rugged landscapes, and outback character collide in the most unexpected way.
85km inland from the coastal charm of Bowen lies Collinsville, a historic mining town tucked beneath the dramatic Clarke Range and known as the “Heart of the Outback.” This region is rich in stories—from ancient Indigenous pathways to the gritty determination of early pioneers—and it’s all waiting to be uncovered on our immersive Outback Heritage Trail.Your day kicks off at 7am from Airlie Beach as we head to Bowen for a scenic stop at Horseshoe Bay and Flagstaff Hill. Breathe in the ocean air before we leave the coastline behind and watch the scenery shift dramatically—fields of fruit and vegetables give way to rugged ridgelines, wide open skies, and a landscape that feels worlds away from the islands.
This is the Whitsundays like you’ve never seen it—raw, real, and absolutely unforgettable. As we make our way toward Collinsville, your guide—an enthusiastic storyteller with a passion for regional history—shares tales of the Birri people and the coal-fuelled development that turned this outpost into a hub of industry and resilience. Keep your eyes peeled—we often pass coal trains hauling their heavy load from one of the three operating mines nearby.Once in Collinsville, enjoy morning tea at a lookout with sweeping views of the Clarke Ranges. Then, dive headfirst into the region’s rich heritage at the Coalface Experience, an interactive museum that vividly brings to life the tough, transformative mining history of the area.
A short drive takes us to Scottville, a once-bustling mining hub where a retired miner guides you through the remnants of a working mine—sharing gripping, personal stories that you won’t find in any guidebook. From there, it’s on to the local kangaroo sanctuary, where you’ll meet an inspiring wildlife carer and help feed injured and orphaned roos. A truly heartwarming experience. With appetites growing, we’ll head to a classic country pub for a hearty lunch—country hospitality at its finest. And if conditions allow, we’ll take a detour to the legendary Bowen River Hotel, built in 1861. This rustic relic of the frontier era is steeped in history—and maybe even haunted, so keep an eye out for the hotel’s ghostly guests
On the way back, we’ll make one last stop at the iconic Big Mango before cruising down the coast to Airlie Beach.
This is no ordinary tour.
It’s a journey for history lovers, outback explorers, and curious travelers looking for something truly different in the Whitsundays. Wild landscapes, unforgettable stories, and authentic country encounters—this is a day trip that leaves a lasting impression.TERMS AND CONDITIONS

She even went twice to find a customer who could not find the joining point while also ring the person's phone twice.
This is an amazing part of the world and please book to get the the full experience plus Cherene ensured that we were back in time for the cruises tender.
Park bushwalk and cedar creek falls tour and wow! Swimming in the creek was so refreshing and beautiful. Cherene is a great tour guide, keeps the energy up with her enthusiasm! Highly recommend!
wonderfull bush walk. highly recommended
We arrived just in time for sunrise on a cloudy morning and were greeted by kangaroos and wallabies, some with joeys nestled in their pouches, peacefully roaming the beach. The photos came out brilliantly. Cherene shared interesting insights throughout the morning, striking a perfect balance between informative and relaxed.
The ranger ensured respectful wildlife viewing, reminding everyone to keep their distance and switch off camera flashes to avoid startling the animals. Afterward, we had the option to walk up to the lookout or simply enjoy more time with the kangaroos on the beach.
Breakfast was a lovely way to wrap up the morning. With just eight of us on the tour, it felt personal — and the cost was more than justified by the experience. This tour would suit anyone who loves kangaroos.
Thank you, Cherene! Your energy, warmth, and love for what you do shine through every detail. This tour was so much more than I expected, and I’d recommend it to absolutely anyone visiting Airlie Beach and surroundings, there's so much more to see!!!
We had the best day, really looked after and absolutely loved it!
Thank you Driftwood Tours and Cherene x
Not only is Cherene knowledgeable and authentic, but she went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time and that we learnt about the history, nature and the area.
She had the car all set up with blankets and pillows for the ride to the national park (which was early to make it there in time for sunrise) making us feel very comfortable for a little snooze on the way there, and we had a great breakfast set up after the sunrise. As a cherry on top we also did a beautiful hike to a viewpoint after breakfast, and stop at local bakery to buy some pastries on the way back to Airlie.
Highly recommend Cherene’s Driftwood Tours, an incredible independent tour operator if you’re staying in Airlie Beach.
Charlene is a fantastic driver & guide who took us all over Airlie & Shute Harbour. The tour was informative and helpful as we were able to work out restaurants etc to visit. She took us to great private & public viewing points so we could admire the beauty of this special place.
Charlene always went out of her way to make sure we thoroughly enjoyed our experience!
Really had a blast - and am sure all their other tours are equally fun!
I even licked an ant !!

We wanted to bring her back to Canada
