Butterbox Canyon Adventure Tour

Embark on a challenging descent into Butterbox Canyon, where adventure awaits at every turn. This intermediate-to-advanced canyoning tour features seven thrilling abseils, including two dramatic 20-meter drops into the deepest part of the slot canyon—one of which takes you through a cascading waterfall. Along the way, experience rock jumps, steep climbs, and stunning views of the Blue Mountains.

The day concludes with a steep hike out, offering breathtaking vistas of the Grose Valley. This physically demanding yet rewarding tour is designed for those ready to test their limits and discover the raw beauty of the Blue Mountains.


Is this canyon for me?

Difficulty: Requires a high level of fitness.
The exit involves uphill hiking with a pack and a small rock climb.
Previous canyoning/abseiling/hiking experience will be beneficial. You
must be able to answer yes to the following questions:

  • Can you swim short distances/ are you comfortable in water?
  • Do you exercise regularly and/or have a physically active job?
  • Are you in good shape and/or have good stamina?
  • Are you capable of walking up steep inclines and on rocky and uneven
    terrain, while carrying a pack, for an extended period of time?


Expectations: Adventurous activities are tough – you must expect the possibility of, at times, being uncomfortable, wet, cold, tired and scared.

Don’t book this tour without first discussing what the tour involves with all members of your group and checking they meet the fitness requirements.

Length: Approximately 8-9 hours

Availability: September to April.

Included: Lunch, all canyoning equipment, qualified canyoning guide, safety instruction including on abseiling techniques.

Meeting location: Corner of Mt Hay Rd and Britan St, Leura.

Arriving by train? Pickup from nearby Leura Train Station can be requested when booking.


This exciting adventure consists of:

IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

PRIOR TO ARRIVAL

You will be required to fill out a waiver and medical form on the day. Unaccompanied participants under 18 years of age must have a consent and medical form completed prior by a parent or legal guardian prior to the activity. Please contact us if this is required.

Remember that this is a strenuous and committing activity. Please arrive well rested, fit, hydrated and keen for a big day of adventure. Ensure everyone in your party understand what the day involves and what the fitness requirements are.

PLEASE NOTE: There will be no toilet facilities at the meeting location or in the canyon. Mountain High Pies located nearby on the Great Western Highway is the recommended coffee and bathroom stop.

MEETING LOCATION
Unless specified otherwise, the default meeting location for this activity is 5 Mt Hay Rd, Leura (Roundabout outside of Leura Public School). A google maps link to this location is provided above.
The Eagle Rock Adventures Bus will drive the group from the meeting point to the start of the canyon.

Late arrival will result in your tour commencing without you. Aim to arrive early if traveling from afar as it is not possible to join the tour after it has begun.

What to bring for Canyoning:

We cannot cater for food allergies or special dietary requirements, in this case you must supply your own food. Secure waterproof containers will be provided to store food in the canyon.
• Durable older clothing. Dress weather appropriately (check weather forecasts).
• Fleece/warm jacket, thermal undershirt, long pants – if the weather is cold this is critical.
• Running shoes, joggers or trainers to wear in the canyon (they will get wet). Shoes must be enclosed.
• Swimming attire (wear under clothes).
• 3 litres of water per person minimum.
• Sunscreen.
• Hair ties for long hair.
• Sunglasses (optional).
• Rain jacket (check weather forecasts).
• Camera/Gopro (optional, must be waterproof and strongly tied to your body).

Canyoning backpacks will be provided to carry canyoning equipment.  Clothes worn into the canyon can be placed in dry bags to stay dry after changing into wetsuits at the start of the canyon. These are worn again when exiting the canyon.

Leave the following behind in your car for after the tour:
• A towel.
• Change of clothes.
• Change of footwear.

Please leave valuables at home as we cannot guarantee their safety. Especially jewelry and non-waterproof electronics.
Any item brought into the canyon has the potential to be lost or destroyed due to water ingress, impact etc.
