Spent two evenings here with a friend and was absolutely blown away by just how good this place was. The staff were friendly and their whiskey knowledge was superb. Their recommendations were well-founded and hit the mark every time.
The atmosphere is very relaxed and it is really easy to whittle away an evening in good company.
It is not a cheap outing if you settle in for the evening, but you pay for quality, and this place has quality to spare.

Fantastic whiskey bar with a massive range. The full menu is impressive. Very knowledgeable staff who can help with suggestions based on taste.

We did the whiskey Masterclass and it was excellent. Learnt so much. Also got to enjoy a glass of 12 year old Arran afterwards which was a rare delight.

I recently had a Batchelor Party here & It was well & truely the highlight of the night. Aiden was our host for our two hour session & man did he know his stuff! An absolutely amazing class that was extremely informative, interesting & interactive. Everyone that attended said they loved it! We even stayed downstairs after our private room + whiskey class. Super cosy space with amazing displays of whiskey; a true whiskey lovers bar. I’ll be back here in the future! Whether you’re looking to host a function or just hit up a bar in the Melb Central area, this is the place!

I'll be back for sure anytime I'm in Melbourne. Ordered a flight of whiskies. Told the bartender my preferences and curiosities, then he proposed a tasting journey for the flight I was happy to take. The whiskies were excellently sequenced for an increasingly intense, but complimentary flavour profile. I got to enjoy whiskeys outside of what I'd usually choose.

Superb service. I got the whiskey tasting paddle and it was great to have an omakase-style experience with letting the bartender decide. I loved the personable service of them explaining the selection to you. And the flavours were great! I was told one of them was smoky like charcuterie and indeed it was, so rich and full in flavour.

Frustrating experience, which could actually be a great bar I spent four days in Melbourne over the weekend—a great city, especially when it comes to food. By chance, I discovered the whisky bar Whisky & Alement on Saturday evening.

The bar boasts an impressive selection of whiskies, and the staff are friendly, enthusiastic, and highly knowledgeable. I opted for a tasting set, which was fantastic, and the detailed insights from the staff made the experience even better.
During our conversation, one of the staff members asked how long I’d be in Melbourne. “Four days,” I replied. He then suggested I visit every evening to try more whiskies, as the bar was open daily.

On Sunday evening, I returned from my tour later than planned but still wanted to round off my day with another great whisky experience. I hurried across the city—according to Google, Whisky & Alement was open until 10:00 PM. However, when I arrived at 9:30 PM, a staff member was just about to close the door. He informed me that the last orders had already been taken and that they would be closing soon. When I asked if I could quickly order a whisky, he firmly declined. Disappointed, I headed back to my hotel.

On Monday, my last evening in Melbourne, I decided to try again. The listed closing time was once again 10:00 PM. After dinner, I took a leisurely stroll toward the bar around 8:00 PM, looking forward to a satisfying end to my trip. But despite the information on Google and their official website, the bar was closed.

Another disappointment. What I find frustrating is that the staff member had encouraged me to return, yet his suggestion ultimately led to nothing. This left a lasting negative impression. Reliability and professionalism do not seem to be priorities at Whisky & Alement, which is why, unfortunately, I cannot recommend the bar.

Thankfully, that evening I found another fantastic whisky bar, where I was able to enjoy the perfect end to my stay.

A nice small bar, we had Ryan take our taste buds on an adventure we won’t ever forget by helping us pick a whisky flight we would love. He met all our needs, took the time to listen to what we like what we’ve had before and suggested options. He also explained all the choices he picked by telling us why, where they were from and how they are made, we couldn’t be happier with the experience, 100% recommend the dealers choice whiskey flight and ask for Ryan as he is an expert.

Big fan of this place! Knowledgable staff, good selection, and prices are reasonable. All them to pair a beer for any whiskey you pick for a custom boilermaker.

Staff were incredible, such a huge selection of whisky options from all over. Really great whisky cocktails too.
Place is more of an intimate setting, so could get loud as people talk over each other if it gets busy, but still a brilliant setting if you like whisky

Awesome little whisky bar with over 500 whiskies! We did some whisky tasting flights where the bartender chose the selection for us based on our tastes. He didn't disappoint!

If I had one gripe, it would be that the stools are uncomfortable - they're fixed to the ground, don't have a footrest, and don't have a backrest. These things would make the place perfect!

As a whisky fan I was delighted to see more whiskys and whiskeys than I’d ever seen in one bar before! The bar tenders were fabulous, just lovely to chat to, with lots of knowledge and genuine interest in their patrons.

Great Whisky - Great Service We had some time to spare in Melbourne and wanted to see what this Whisky bar had to offer and it did not disappoint. They had a large variety of overseas and local whisky.
There is only one thing better than a great Whisky and that is chatting to the bar person about its history, tasting notes and background.
Kimi who looked after us was a wealth of knowledge and provided us exception service. Cant wait to be back in Melbourne and try some new arrivals.

The selection here is amazing. So many different whiskies. Super knowledgeable staff. Ardbeg ambassadors so they have anything from Ardbeg you can imagine. Even had this years festival release, spectacular. Got the dealers choice. They set me up with a fun tasting that really showcased what flavors I told them I liked. Will go back if I am in the area. Worth traveling to visit this place! Only sad part was no food, what they did have was delicious but it was more snacks than anything else.

I was in Russell Street, early for a 5 o'clock meal at Yamato (so good). As a Laphroaig fan I wanted to try something similar but different. Got lucky on advice from proprietor Julian. For a dark dive (smoke-free, thank God) - noisy alive with fellow SM ratbags - it's hard to imagine any place more pleasing for a quiet sit & sip.

I was in Melbourne and happened to visit Whisky and Alement as suggested by Ardbeg Committee on their website. More so I wanted to taste Bizzarebq, Ardbeg's new release. But I got to try other SM such as Archie Rose & Longrow. This place is well stocked and for a single malt fan it's absolute heaven. They have most of the SM whiskies available. They serve great food and they have whisky tasting packages too. They have a typical bar seating. The bar is quite crowded so you may have to wait to get attended to. The guys who run the place are very helpful and knowledgeable about the SM whiskies and other alcohol served there. This place is highly recommended if you are in Melbourne.

Lovely cosy atmosphere. Unbelievable range of whiskey on hand including scotch, US, rye, Japanese and local options, also good gin and run options. We didn't eat but the food menu reads very well. Don't expect a full sit down meal. This place is for sipping whiskey in good company. The staff are incredibly good! Very engaging and knowledgeable. I tried 2 new whiskey's with their recommendations and was blown away

Disappointed- ordered a whiskey sour- served in a tiny cocktail stemmed glass (apx 100ml) and definitely didn't have the expected 2 shots of whisky - quite the rort for $21!

Fantastic array and selection of Scotch and Whisky. The service and knowledge was outstanding and we were fortunate to be able to have a very long conversation about Scotch and a bit about life. The prices were better than any of the bars and Scotch places we visited and again the selection and knowledge was excellent, on that note alone I wish I lived in the city to be able to have MORE!

Wonderful little bar with a great selection, fair prices and superb staff. Wandered in for a drink after a long day and just sharing the most basic description of my normal whiskeys got me a selection of options, history on each and nice chat about the selections.

Massive range of whiskys, great beers, and super tasty accompanying food plates. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and the music is at the perfect level so conversation is still easy without having to strain to hear. The booth was very comfortable and I sat with my friend for an enjoyable couple of hours. The staff were very helpful and accommodating, and very knowledgeable when it came to what they were serving. Loved every minute of it!

A great place to drop in and have a whiskey The wife and I dropped in to have a couple of samples, wife had a whisky cocktail and I had the 4 glass sample paddle, both where fantastic. Staff where great will go back again.

I've been meaning to visit this whisky bar for a while now. With two other whisky amateurs in tow, we arrived on a Friday afternoon and were promptly seated at the bar. It's the best place to witness the deep expertise of the bartenders, a plethora of whisky on display, and to hear the most splendid stories and recommendations on what to drink and why.

As an introduction, my two companions had the apple juice cocktail, which was refreshing and delicious. It was easy to drink too much in as little time!

To whet our initial curiosity, we asked for something sweet and friendly for beginners, so the bartender gave us a Speyside, a Glenrothes 18 that impressed my companion to no end and has likely converted him to contemplative, whisky drinking.

A bit more experienced, I had a Springbank 12, and the 18 was given to my companion to try. As always, this Campbell distillery cannot disappoint as the vegetal, earthy sweetness really situated us within the bar, which had a warm, vintage feel --all dark wood and soft light. Our bartender was generous with her knowledge, which was deeply engaging and impressively broad. We listened in rapt attention as she explained how the current bottlings don't seem to live up to the ones before, now that Springbank has gained more popularity and a rabid international following that's kept it in short supply.

The indulgence of the night was a Bruichladdich 1994 Black Art, which I'd been meaning to try precisely at this bar since a bottle is prohibitively expensive. Whisky and Alement boasts one of the most comprehensive whisky collections in the country. I visited for precisely this reason and I wasn't disappointed! The Black Art is an amazing serve that sings with undulating complexity, romantic hardness, and unpeated, golden inquisition at every sip. Note that one can order half a serve for half the price, extending one's wallet and ability to drink more if 30ml per serve is too much. I did that with the Black Art and now I can say I've tasted a once-in-a-lifetime dram without having to buy an entire bottle!

But it wasn't just whisky we were introduced to. We asked for some gin recommendations and received some names we'd never heard of, all rated highly. Naturally, whisky distilleries also produce gin in order to make a quick buck because whisky takes years to age. Our bartender displayed beautiful bottles of The Botanicals and The Isle of Harris, the former bottled in Islay by Bruichladdich and the latter, a Scottish award winner.

So, if the knowledge and conversational skills of the bartenders don't entice you, or the sheer amount of choice of whisky, or even the warm, comfortable ambiance, then maybe the other types of alcohol, cocktails, and even the snacks will, eventually. It was such an unforgettable, charming experience! I highly recommend this bar to anyone looking for a journey through spirits, attention-grabbing conversations with experts, an enjoyable time with friends, and a place where all the above are deeply respected. Keep doing what you're doing, Whisky & Alement! There isn't any other place doing it like you do!

We're lucky to have this Quiet boilermaker with an interdependently bottled Ledaig in low lit ambience. We're very lucky to have this place in our city.

Good whisky selections If you remember, I did mention that my friend, Choong, was in Melbourne. We kept in touch throughout and planned to meet up when I was in Melbourne city. So.. after the awesome dinner in MoVida Aqui, we walked back to our apartment - full, happy but tired. I settled the kids and tasked the other half to put them to bed while I headed off to my appointment with Choong.

I'd been meaning to hit one of the best whisky place in town, and Choong agreed to meet me in Whisky & Alement. It took me about 20 min++ walk from the apartment to the whisky bar, while just simply took Uber. I had known him for quite some time by then, when my interest in Glendronach led me to know him but unbeknownst to me, he was more into wine business.

It was always a happy affair to meet up with someone whom I can talk to about anything The bar was packed with whisky lovers when we arrived yet we managed to get a table. Attended by a friendly and knowledgeable personnel, both of us had a whisky flight each Based on our preference. Needless to say, we had a great time catching up although we seldom see each other while in KL.

I had to say this.. but my experience here was a great one. Whisky lovers must come here at least once to experience the hospitality of Australian.
