This place is amazing!! I had the golden oysters and they were super fresh and tasty. I found Melshell Oysters by chance and decided to give it a chance. Couldn’t be better for my 1st day in the island. I paid $18 for half a dozen

Honestly they are some of the most delicious oysters I’ve ever had. I highly recommend trying half doz. of the gold oysters and then compare with half doz. of the silver. The difference in flavour between the two is really interesting and the buttery flavour of the gold one is so good.
Friendly staff and a sweet little shack. Plus great views to sit at near the water.

We found this place by chance and I’m so glad we did. I’m not usually a big oyster person, but I really enjoyed these. We ordered three gold and three silver oysters with mignonette sauce, and the flavours paired perfectly I enjoyed them all but preferred the gold. We took them up to the hill and enjoyed them with an amazing view, which made the experience even better. The staff were friendly and helpful too. Definitely worth a stop if you’re visiting.

Love this place, the taste of nature. Beautiful fresh taste of the silver shell oyster. The golden shell got the taste of that unique sweet after taste. Must come and try yourself.

This was my first visit, and the drive in from the highway was unexpectedly dramatic, with a recent bushfire visibly impacting nearby beach shacks and properties. As a direct‑to‑market oyster outlet, the pricing was higher than anticipated. For comparison, I had recently purchased a dozen excellent oysters from a Hobart farm for $17 at a service station—though of course, circumstances vary.
The venue itself has considerable charm. A dedicated viewing window for oyster shucking would be a valuable addition, as the current setup required navigating through garden seating—and a few bumblebees—just to catch a brief glimpse of the process. A clear, intentional shucking display would undoubtedly be a strong drawcard.
I noticed they offered scallop kebabs and portable cookers for visitors to take down to the waterfront and enjoy with a view, which is a thoughtful touch. Large decorative piles of oyster shells added character and hinted at potential for repurposing, such as agricultural pH balancers.
Although the venue is not open on public holidays, it remains a beautiful spot, complemented by craft beers and the appealing colours of the serving caravan. There is significant potential here, and despite a few areas for improvement, it is still very much worth a visit.

Like everyone else who is an oyster enthusiast, we went to seek out the best oyster we could find. Melshell oysters are truely unique - creamy, plump and have this bite to them. We got the gold and silver oysters and the gold oysters aren’t just gold by colour they are truly gold by standard. They are buttery like a rich cream. We realised that the Oyster Shack did tours as well and honestly would have loved to hear more about them. Don’t be like us, book a tour and definitely come here. The oysters are so worth it here. Currently #1 on the best oysters we’ve ever had.

Visited this place a week ago and the oysters were really good. Prefer this place oysters over their neighbour nearby (had to get ice cream after eating their neighbor's oysters the day before).
Lady boss was very friendly and explained a lot about their oysters farm. Do get both the silver and gold ones. Both are really good and goes well with the DIY grill.
The place is also nicely decorated.

The BEST oysters we’ve had. Ordered x2 of the gold variety first with homemade Worcestershire sauce then the second nam jim. So fresh & buttery tasting. Paired it with a glass of Tassie white & beer. It’s in the middle of nowhere but well worth it !! Love the beach decor around the venue. Sandpit for the kids.

So glad we found this little slice of oyster heaven. hands down the best oysters we’ve ever had! We loved it so much we came back twice: once on a sunny day with beautiful seating right by the water, and again on a rainy day where the cosy undercover setup was just perfect.
The skewers were super tasty, and having the little BBQ at the table to cook them how we liked was such a fun touch! The gold oysters were buttery, flavour-packed, and all a great size.
We also loved the thoughtful touches in the decor, loads of oyster shells, floats, and old buoys all cleverly repurposed instead of ending up in the ocean.
The staff were absolutely lovely and made us feel so welcome. Totally worth the drive, and we’re already looking forward to our next visit, next time we’re across the strait.

Absolutely incredible experience at Melshell's Oysters. The atmosphere is super relaxed perfect for kicking back and enjoying some seriously fresh seafood. Hands down, these were the best oysters I've ever had perfectly shucked, incredibly flavorful, and clearly super fresh. Can't recommend this place enough if you're an oyster lover or just looking for a chill, top-quality spot to eat.

They’re my No.1 🥇🏆 — seriously the BEST oysters I’ve ever had!! Located in the middle of nowhere 🤣 with just a food truck and a small factory next to it. They even recycle oyster shells as sauce containers — so cute! 😍 There’s also an oyster wall you have to check out! Besides oysters, they also serve other seafood and the quality is top-notch too 👍💯 Honestly, they’re one of the biggest reasons I’d return to Tassie 🫶🏻 Unforgettable!
🦪 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗢𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿💰$𝟭𝟴 (𝟭/𝟮 𝗱𝗼𝘇𝗲𝗻)

This one surprised me in the best way 🥹 It was my first time trying mussels served cold, and they turned out better than expected! The sweet chilli sauce pairs perfectly. We wanted to order more, but—yep, sold out again 😭
🐟 𝗕𝗕𝗤 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗽💰$𝟭𝟬 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵
They have a DIY BBQ option at your table where you can grill scallops, prawns, and oysters. Unfortunately, everything sold out quickly again, so we only managed to try the scallop. It was still delicious! The flavor is different from woodfire-grilled ones, but the BBQ version is still tasty—especially with the sauce and the bacon kebab on the side! 😋

The best oysters we've ever had! This stop was one of the highlights of our two week roadtrip. We arrived early (about 10.30/11) and there was only one other couple there. Great spot setup with little chairs and tables scattered around. There's a cute caravan that you order from and the shed right next door to watch them shucking and buy some souvenirs.
We sat up on the bank which overlooks the river enjoying our oysters and glass of Chardonnay. Highly recommend the nimjam dressing too, although not necessary with how unbelievably fresh and tasty the oysters are on their own!

So glad we stumbled accords this gem. The oysters were sensational. Considering I’m from SA the bar was set pretty high however the bay oysters here were buttery and had some different flavours to offer. The ‘cook your own’ skewers was so cool, such a good idea. We sat up on the lookout at the other oyster leases in the water and ate our yummy lunch after a big day exploring Freycinet. Decent prices too. I loved all the old oyster shells stacked up everywhere.

Did you know Melshell is multi-fine food award winning? 😳
An incredible must-see gem along the scenic east coast. Fun, easygoing and photogenic; seating along the water, and stacks of oyster shells in creative displays - what more do you need to say 🤩
The owners are also super friendly and always down for a chat!
And the oysters - you can see why Melshell gets the reviews they do. Arguably the best we've ever had - freshly shucked, delicious and humongous for the price, this is a place absolutely worth the detour.

We tried the Gold oysters, which were incredibly fresh and creamy—best enjoyed without any sauce. We did try a sauce with pineapple, which was tasty, but we preferred the oysters plain because they were so fresh! The best oysters I’ve had in my life, we live in Sydney and it was better than all the Sydney oysters we’ve had.
We also had the mussels served with lemon, steamed with white wine - these were big and juicy, very good as well.
For the highlight we got both gold and silver oysters but we actually found that we liked silver more than gold, gold had an interesting aftertaste but the silver was classic.
We ate 6 dozens amongst four people in that day because it was just so good. there were also a few in house dressings that we tried which were all great.
Service is also great, the people working there were super friendly. Venue is cute and has a nice vibe & view whilst you’re eating oysters.
Amazing experience, will be back if we’re ever in tassie again 🩷

We took a bit of a detour on our way to Coles Bay and stopped by Melshell.
We tried their silver oyster and their mussels. Both were very fresh. The oysters were plump and large (bigger than all other oysters we’ve tried in Tassie). The flavour of the oysters was clean and crisp - perfect for those like me who prefer less creamy oysters.
There are plenty of seating in the area. If the weather is nice, look for the seats overlooking the oyster farm.
Love that they collect and reuse all the oyster shells. Hopefully, we’ll be able to try their gold oysters in our next visit.

The gold oyster wasn’t ready when I went there so just got to try the silver ones. One of the freshest oysters I’ve ever had in so long. Place is a bit out of the way but it’s definitely worth the trip, especially when you’re in the east coast. Pretty sure I saw a free campsite nearby as well which was not on wiki maps, so if you’re going on a roadtrip/camping, it’s a bonus. We thoroughly enjoyed our oyster tour at Melshell Oyster Shack. The lovely Cass talked us through the harvesting process, and the price of the tour also included a drink of your choice and a half dozen oysters. We were also shown the best way to shuck an oyster and even had a go at shucking one ourselves! Highly recommend it. There was a fire at Dolphin Sands the day we originally had booked in, so a big thanks to Cass for rescheduling and fitting us in the following day at a time that suited us. It was also great news to hear that everyone at Dolphin Sands is now safe. Thank you!

But to sit looking out over Pelican Bay on a lovely spring day was absolute heaven!

You HAVE TO visit this place if you’re in the area.
The experience was a whole nother level and the freshness of the oysters are unbeatable. The best oysters we’ve had throughout our trip????
The lady (sorry I didn’t get your name) running the store was beautiful, she told us about the types of oysters that’s available and what she usually recommends. We went with half regular and half golden oysters.
These oysters are huge, like twice the size of your regular oysters. And the prices are extremely reasonable as well. You’ve got heaps of seating options, but we had to choose the one overlooking the sea.
The drive in was straightforward, you could either use google maps or simply follow the street signs that lead you there. Parking won’t be an issue.
We cannot recommend this place enough if you love your oysters!
