What’s new for 2026? We have made a decision to reduce the number of guests per trip for 2026! We are reducing the guests numbers from 24 guests in 2025 to 12 guests in 2026.
Yes, that is right… just 12 guests on the boat! We are making the tour more exclusive with a focus to provide an even greater guest experience with the swimming with a humpback.
Also, we will now be departing the marina at 7.30am each morning returning at around 12.30pm.
Hervey Bay Dive Centre operates the regions most exclusive and dedicated swim with the whale experience when the humpbacks whales visit Hervey Bay between July and September. Our professional Crew and PADI Dive Team give 100% to ensure you get the experience of a lifetime and an awesome adventure on the water.
This exclusive experience is an incredibly special opportunity to watch & swim with one of nature’s most majestic mammals, the Humpback whale, a curious, gentle and trusting creature. Even if we cannot swim for one reason or another our tour offers a unique and personal whale watch encounter in the best humpback whale watching destination in the world, Hervey Bay!
We purposely operate the tour utilising a small vessel with limited (12) guest numbers making for a personal and fun day on the water.
On the whales terms
We champion a strict Code of Practice when interacting with the whales. The key component to this agreement, and a core philosophy of ours, is “on the whales terms”. In short this means we only interact with whales that are happy for us to do so.
Guaranteed sightings
We guarantee whale sightings (seeing a whale from the vessel) between 20th July and 15th October. In the very unlikely event that the skipper cannot locate a whale during this period you will be offered a free return ticket.
We cannot guarantee the swimming with the whales tour as on occasions the weather, sea state and whales behavior will prohibit the opportunity.
Children
Children under 8 years are not permitted to swim with the whales and a parental guardian must remain with them on the vessel. If 2 guardians are present they can interchange between the vessel and swimming when conditions permit. The tour is not suitable for children under 4 years.

Weather
We monitor the upcoming weather conditions daily. If we anticipate adverse conditions that may affect your opportunity to swim or watch the whales we will endeavour to provide as much notice as possible.
What to bring
If you wish to participate in the swim with the whales encounter please bring a towel and swim wear. Please wear your swimmers under your clothes. Wetsuits will be provided which, you will change into aboard the boat.
- A warm jacket or jumper is recommended

An Unforgettable Whale Swim Experience – Simply the Best!
We had the absolute pleasure of joining a whale swim tour with Hervey Bay Dive Centre, and it was nothing short of exceptional. This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and the team made every moment feel personal, safe, and awe-inspiring.
What really stood out was the small group size, which made the entire day feel intimate and relaxed. There was no waiting around or feeling rushed, just quality time with the whales and the wonderful crew.
The staff were incredibly friendly yet highly professional, striking the perfect balance between making you feel welcome and well looked after. Their knowledge was impressive, and they shared fascinating insights throughout the day, which really added depth to the experience.
And then, the whales… It’s hard to put into words how special it was. Several times, these gentle giants came so close and made eye contact, an emotional and humbling moment we’ll never forget. The views while in the water were amazing and even from the boat, the experience was equally as spectacular.
On top of that, the amenities, food, and overall in service were top notch. Every detail was thought of and executed flawlessly.
We’ve travelled extensively and witnessed many natural wonders around the globe, but nothing compares to the experience we had today. Thank you to the entire Hervey Bay Dive Centre team for a magical day. We will taking this tour again and will talk about the experience for the rest of our lives!
The crew were great, making us feel comfortable, finding lots of whales in a responsible manner and keeping us refreshed with hot drinks, snacks and lunch.
The ability to swim with the willing whales was an unbelievable experience and one which will live long in the memory.
We’ve already recommended this trip to many people on our travels, and would confidently suggest this to any visitor to the sunshine coast!
Thanks Hervey Bay Dive
My little girl was absolutely obsessed with Bella from the crew, and we were so impressed with everyone. Louie, the captain, really stood out with his knowledge and passion. It’s rare these days to find a business that truly cares about the customer experience, but we genuinely felt like part of it—not just participants.
An unforgettable day that we’ll happily make a yearly tradition!
Love the breeze’s
Definitely recommend this tour company and the whale swim experience.
No guarantees because of the weather and the whales have to be in curious/playful mood, but the crew try their best.
I’ll be booking again in whale season :)
2 times in water but whales went away.
More mums with calves in the bay that U can't swim with.
I will be back next year in a better month.
Friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable people. The boat has ample room, you are well looked after and there the group is kept to a small size unlike some of the other boats we saw out on the water.
Unfortunately we didn’t get the opportunity to swim with them as all the whales we had the pleasure of seeing were mother and child combos, however this did not detract from the day and we loved every moment.
I had the most incredible day with the team from Hervey Bay Dive Centre, they were professional, knowledgeable, and so lovely. Lunch and snacks were delicious and plenty to go around. And then there is the swim with the whales 🐋 this was one of the most amazing experiences ever, seeing them up close in there own environment can only say WOW, I have booked it again to do this whale season. It has become an annual activity!!!
Thank you team for this most wonderful day.
I also didn't think the dive guide was very professional, telling us not to have dive buddies and to just follow her in a group of eight while she swam off very fast instead. The currents affected the dives a lot, and she refused to check them before giving the dive briefing even after I requested it on the second day. As a result, on one of the dives we swam against the current the entire time. It was exhausting and felt more like a boot camp than a recreational dive! I wasn't the only passenger to complain about this but the crew just shrugged it off. They also didn't follow the regulations for Queensland dive safety, which include having every diver sign back in once they get back on the boat. Not such an issue with only eight divers compared to the much larger boats, but still.
When I wrote an email of complaint about these issues later, the captain responded and acknowledged everything I said was true but he didn't see a problem with it or offer any solution or compensation.
If you're looking for a dive liveaboard in QLD check out the Spirit of Freedom leaving Cairns. A far better experience for not much more money!
Informative
Smaller boat and hence group made better experience
Unfortunately could not swim with whales as mothers and calves but we so be back next year earlier in season hopefully for swim experience
Highly recommend
Besides, the staff is very nice and tell a lot about the whale, and the trip includes lots of food, snacks and drink for us to enjoy.
The skipper (Grant) always managed, with the best view from above, to get us at a proper distance from the whales. And there were many of them in the best weather. Jumping out of the water, flapping their fins, swimming on their backs or showing off their fascinating tail fins, we saw it all. And they also tried to make swimming possible, but since 90% of the mothers are there with calves at the moment, and you are therefore only allowed in the water with solitary animals (without fins, on a line in the water), it is very difficult. And then these few whales would also have to swim in our direction.
Tea, coffee, sandwiches, fruit, sweets and non-alcoholic cold drinks got us through this great day. I can only recommend this tour with this organiser.
Arrived at 9am to some simple paperwork from Rachel, and the fitted for a wetsuit by Matt and the. Onto the spacious boat skippered by Grant.
Motored about 20 minutes until our first whale sighting, a mother and baby breaching right in front of us.
they have masks and snorkel, or better yet bring your own.
Then it was into the water. Nice simple stairs into the water, suitable for all ages, then onto the safety line and just float into the water, and just wait, we didn’t have to wait long until there were the most incredible whales all around us, at one point a whale passed so close I could reach out and touch it (I didn’t of course), and it’s eye was so beautiful and inquisitive. They stayed with us for nearly an hour and they were so curious about everybody in the water and on the boat.
It was so truly amazing to be in the water with these incredible creatures, so close and not feel any fear as they have such incredible spatial awareness, they know where you are, and just want to get close to check you out.
The rest of the tour was equally incredible, we saw so many mothers and baby’s, so many whales breaching and when we were on the boat Matt and Rachel were constantly moving around offering cups of tea, biscuits, soft drinks and treats. Lunch were subway rolls and fresh fruit.
I would thoroughly recommend this tour for all ages, on our tour the youngest was about 10, and the oldest was…..old????.
To those who say it is cruel, dangerous or in anyway harms the whale, I respectfully disagree, the whole experience is conducted on the whales terms, the boat doesn’t coral them, oaky hydrophones or in anyway try to attract the whale to the boat. They don’t get in the water with mothers and calf’s. The whole experience is educational, motivational and positive and provides you with an awe and a precaution of these amazing creatures who we share the work with.
Thank you to Matt, Rachel and Grant for being amazing crew for the day, they were always there with a villa, a quiet word of encouragement, and safety was always at the forefront.
We will be back and I would recommend this to anyone looking g for an amazing life changing experience in Hervey bay. JUST DO IT.
There are only so many words you can say to describe the experience
Yeah ….AWESOME, AMAZING, SPECIAL
It’s all that and more……..
I’ve looked into the eye of a whale only to see it look back at me with as much curiosity WOW
The crew are experienced fun and friendly and are a great part of the whole interaction
Can’t thank them enough for facilitating this unique Australian experience
The ‘bucket dream’ has been fulfilled and it will last a long time
