Step back in time and discover what Naracoorte was like over 200,000 years ago!

The Wonambi Fossil Centre shows you how the caves acted as pitfall traps, dens and roosts for more than 500,000 years, leading to a vast accumulation of skeletal remains of reptiles, birds and mammals.

Palaeontologists have been studying the fossils and bones in the caves for over 40 years. From them they have been able to identify the animals that roamed the plains. Around 130 species of animals have been recorded, from four of the major vertebrate groups: mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles.

The Fossil Centre recreates a time when megafauna roamed the landscape and the local animal community was more diverse than today.

Please note, entry to the Wonambi Fossil Centre is included for free if you purchase a tour through Alexandra Cave, Victoria Fossil Cave, the Blanche Cave/Bat Observation Centre tour or the self-guided Stick-Tomato Cave.

Opening hours: 9.00am – 5.00pm
